Hey, you've got to have a war on something. Since the war on terrorism and Iraq are kind of out of the spotlight now, Bush has got to find something else to scapegoat.
GWB's war on steroids is completely consistent with all his wars--they are meant to distract the contingent living in the rural/southern US from anything of real importance that is messed up. If we can get really poorly educated people worked up over the "evil of steroids", then we don't have to worry about our other fuck ups. This is no different than GWB using Gay rights, or Abortion, it achieves his objectives of giving some sort of issue to rile up the masses that doesn't make GWB look bad, and distracts attention from the economy, the failed war in Iraq, the failure to capture Bin Laden, the poor state of corporate governance, and on and on. To me, and this is what I said before that was objected to, this all is no different than hold up communism as a pure evil, and starting what amounted to a witch hunt of communists. We have a proud tradition in the US of witch hunts. If you even knew a communist, you could be jailed with no question and complete violation of your human rights. Today, if you are an Arab, the same fate can befall you. And, in the eyes of many, those who are in favour of abortion, or gay marriage, also should be thrown in jail. GWB is a master of playing on these types of feelings. Steroids make for a great witch hunt, too, and by throwing some penny ass dealers in jail for selling "opiates" as steroids are often referred to in the popular press, GWB can make his war on "drugs" look good. In truth, the majour opiate dealers are laughing all the way to the bank. The average American doesn't know the difference between a steroid and heroin, they are both "illicit drugs" that make people high and commit crimes. Plus, there is some sort of twisted "moral" issue that someone on steroids has an "unfair advantage" against some one who isn't. As if having good genetics is NOT an unfair advantage.
I would say sterids are probably the most misunderstood drugs in America. Rather than educate people as to their proper use, we'd rather just throw them in jail for the crime of buildiing muscle. Poor fitness and flab are killing people by the millions, but we wish to abolish a drug that helps build muscle and fight fat. You've got to be kidding.
