Vehicle warranties

Y_Lifter said:
Generally you can only but an extended warranty within the first year
or so of a vehicles life..

Much like buying life insurance after you find out you are gonna die in 2 weeks..
If you could get it, it would be very very expensive. hence not a good value IMO

If you really feel the truck is gonna be due a high dollar repair, look at trading it
in on a new one..

Once they open the engine and tranny in a major way,
the thing will never be the same..

That's kind what I'm thinking...I got some stuff in the mail about the warranty expiring from other companies, but paid it no mind because I thought my warranty was good for another 15K miles. Now that it's lapsed...who knows.

If I can hold my breath and ride it out until the end of the year, I might be able to get a decent deal. I was all set to put 4 new tires on it though, which sucks. I may go ahead and do that, fix a couple of other minor things, and try to sell it myself, then buy something new. Odds are, though, that the cost of sales tax would probably equal the cost of buying another warranty.

In any case, it's not a decision I was wanting to make right now.

I paid cash for a '99 Mazda 626 from the dealer 2 yrs ago, used obviously. It had 6 months left on the factory warranty but I bought a 2-year extended because I didn't want to find out I got a lemon. So far so good.

The cost of extending your warranty 2 years or so would probably equal the money
you would put out to get into a new or newer vehicle..

Those that are Mechanically inclined can push a vehicle over 100K miles.
But I don't have the skill to do my own repairs and can't have my wife stranded
if it breaks down. And I can't stand it when it happens to me..
So when the vehicle starts being unreliable, we trade in..

It was only $1,000, whereas a newer model year was going to be at least double that.

Here's what I found out:

To buy another warranty, it'd cost anywhere from $1241 to $1666, depending on deductibles, and that would get me another 2 years and 40K miles of coverage. There's no clause about pre-existing conditions, anything like that...just so long as I haven't had it looked at yet.

The cash outlay for a new vehicle right now would likely be a $500 down payment and about $1800 for cash and licensing.

The only other sticking point to me is that it states in this agreement that you have to provide, upon request, receipts for required maintenance. I don't have receipts for every oil change that I've ever had done, and it looks like I'm due for an inspection of several components. My only concern would be that if they come back and ask for oil change receipts, I'm not going to have them all...

Project, you have a chevy. Don't sweat and pocket the money? I mean do you really think you are going to blow an engine or tranny in 40k miles or before a 100k miles? I mean why do you think they give warrantys only to a 100k? Because the risk is so low that a motor or tranny will screw up before then. Now if you had a dodge I would buy they warranty.

I wouldn't be concerned if not for the fact that it (A) makes some sort of clicking noise when it goes into passing gear and (B) the transmission seems to slip on occasion.

Do some research on some of these "extended" warranties. Some of them are total shams (the smaller ones) and some of them are legit. Usually the mechanics in the shop will give you a more unbiased opinion on whether they're good or not. The salesperson is biased since it's in his interest to sell it to you. It's good profit for the guy to add those ancillary add-on services at the end of the deal.
