It's going to take some time... I'll give you the quick and the clear.
The accident really happened. He went into dreamland just after he woke up in the puddle (with the disfigurd face) and P.Cruz helped him up (that part was a dream) -- and at the end of the movie where they explained what REALLY happened, is what happened in his life AFTER he woke up in the puddle... leading to his eventual going to the place where they put you in suspended animation...
at the end... his dream was all fucked up... because he was suspended for like 100 years... now technology can cure him, but he'll be broke... or he could continue living in his dream world... by jumping off the building, he embraced the new life he'd have.. with a fixed up face... but having no money.
Does that explain it?

Tom Cruise Dies and is frozen Cryogenics lab... While in this frozen state you dream and basically make your own reality. To leave your dream like state you have to face your biggest fear (at least that is what I got from it... fuck.. I saw it 2 years ago. ) His was the fear of heights... thus he jumps off the building to come out of his sleep.

Vanilla Sky is a remake of Open your Eyes which I believe was a Spanish film that Penelope Cruz played the very same role.
And Citrus explained it quite well.

Yeah some of my friends didn't get the movie. I got it...seemed really stupid...clever that they can make it so convoluted though, I just liked Cameron Diaz

I didn't get it either. I thought the whole thing was really sad. I'll have to see it again now that its been explained. I didn't get Mulholland Drive.
