Tyelenol's effect on gains: myth or any science behind it?

If I use free weights (mainly dumbbells for upper body), eventually I develop pain in my shoulders.
Sometimes pain becomes a little too much.
But I also make best gains using free weights.

Ibuprofen is prostaglandin-inhibitor and anti-inflammatory, and there could be a possible mechsnism to decrease the gains.
But Tyelenol's pain-reducing effect is solely on brain. As far as I know, it doesn't have any direct effect on muscle (it does have effect on liver).

I am planning to take couple of tyelenols before my next work out. Any reason I shouldn't do so?

i have heard that NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs) can interfere with gains, but i dont know if that is really true....it might be justthe person, cuz i had a bad shoulder and used to take 6-7 advil before my delts and chest workouts.....now im ok, but i kind of felt like it did hinder gains...

anyone else?

Tyelenol or acetaminophen is not an NSAID. Advil or ibuprofen is.

I take acetaminofen like candy. Have been for years. Actually the cheap stuff from Wal-Mart in the huge bottle. Never has hindered my gains. Best part about it? IT WORKS. Aleve is pure shit.

tylenol won't affect your gains, but it's brutal on the liver if you decide to make it a primary supplement.

if you're using orals, steer well clear

Maximum dose of tyelenol is 4 gram a day - that comes to 8 extra-strength (500mg) pills a day.
Even if you are on orals, probably you would be OK if you take just couple of pills before workout.

Don't you love how our society is structured? Tylenol is an OTC drug which can cause permanent liver failure in relatively small doses (10-15 extra strength pills), not to mention alcohol and the vehicular deaths/miscellaneous violence associated with it. And yet bodybuilders and athletes have to sneak around as if they're child molesters to get their hands on performance enhancing substances. So to all of you guys out there that are chemically enhanced, be proud of yourselves, and don't ever apologize to anyone.

Effect of ibuprofen and acetaminophen on postexercise muscle protein synthesis.Trappe TA, White F, Lambert CP, Cesar D, Hellerstein M, Evans WJ.

We examined the effect of two commonly consumed over-the-counter analgesics, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, on muscle protein synthesis and soreness after high-intensity eccentric resistance exercise. Twenty-four males (25 +/- 3 yr, 180 +/- 6 cm, 81 +/- 6 kg, and 17 +/- 8% body fat) were assigned to one of three groups that received either the maximal over-the-counter dose of ibuprofen (IBU; 1,200 mg/day), acetaminophen (ACET; 4,000 mg/day), or a placebo (PLA) after 10-14 sets of 10 eccentric repetitions at 120% of concentric one-repetition maximum with the knee extensors. Postexercise (24 h) skeletal muscle fractional synthesis rate (FSR) was increased 76 +/- 19% (P < 0.05) in PLA (0.058 +/- 0.012%/h) and was unchanged (P > 0.05) in IBU (35 +/- 21%; 0.021 +/- 0.014%/h) and ACET (22 +/- 23%; 0.010 +/- 0.019%/h). Neither drug had any influence on whole body protein breakdown, as measured by rate of phenylalanine appearance, on serum creatine kinase, or on rating of perceived muscle soreness compared with PLA. These results suggest that over-the-counter doses of both ibuprofen and acetaminophen suppress the protein synthesis response in skeletal muscle after eccentric resistance exercise. Thus these two analgesics may work through a common mechanism to influence protein metabolism in skeletal muscle.
