I call it going to the gym to lift weights. Its a hobby of mine and I am never going to compete. I suppose if I was going to compete ever in my life I might call it training. Just wonder who actual Trains to compete or just goes to the gym and lifts.

If you call it training just to be cool the world needs followers for the rest of us to lead. But if you call it traing cause you are competing we also need leaders like that. Just curious

There's a difference between Training and Weight Training.. Weight Training = Lifting.. Training should be specific to an event or competition.

Not really, I'm training, yet it's with weights, so it is weight training....

My thoughts exactly lots of 145#ers in here that are always TRAINING and I wonder for what the Olympics? They could be set out for that I dont know i just think it is the wrong word to use for some people but not like its cancer or anything I was just curios how many actually are training for a competition verses just lifting for looks. I bet most are just lifters

If you do the Oly lifts I would call it training b/c you are working form as much as pushing maxes.

Now BB's on the other hand are lifting weights.

Now BB's on the other hand are not training - they are manipulating muscle to appear strong while maintaining very little strength. So they are lifting weights.
ibFlames.

I like you.. but 'maintain very little strength?' -- on what planet?

Interesting question bro……

If you are lifting weights would you then describe yourself as a weightlifter???

Personally, I Train……. I train like my MOTHER FU****G life depends on it!
I am competing late in 07, but will do so only one time and whether I compete or not would have no bearing on how I describe myself!

I would (as well as most others) describe myself as a Body Builder… Lifting weights is merely one of the tools I use to sculpt my physique!

Just playing around w/ you Mike - when I saw you int he thread I had to make a BB comment.....nothing but love ove here in PL'ville.
hah <3

I was gonna say.. tell that to Ronnie, Jay, Gunter, jonnie jackson, flex.. they're all madddddddddddddd strong. :)

I'm training to be in shape to play with my kids and eventually play with their kids.
It is not an Olympic Sport but it is my sport.

I had my kids quite late so this is no joke. Even my father was 42 when I was born and he still ended up being my baseball coach. Glad he kept in shape too, he still walks every day and lifts the dumbellls at age 83

ps. I should add that I do compete in martial arts but that's not really why I lift weights.

I train.

What do I train, to do you ask?

Current focus is to make my pressing (flat bench specifically) stronger. So the skinny fuckers stop out benching me, lol.

It's a hobby for me. With specific goals and each session I know what i'm supposed to do, ect.

I hate "just working out" with no apparent purpose. That gets old quick. And wasted too long doing that when I was a "bodybuilder" at a whopping 160lbs.

Now, I would never consider myself a bodybuilder unless I was an avid competitor and was training for the stage consistently.

i go to gym to lift, but i train when i kickbox...
BUT when i'm on, i'm training...
BUT who gives a fuck, this is a dumb post now that i think of it, who cares what u call it as long as u do it, and call it whatever...

That’s what I am talking about bro…. I am 38 and have 2 beautiful daughters ( 7 and 10) I figure by the time they get to dating age I should be one big MOFO!!

I joke with them that they are going to have to bring boyfriend prospects to meet me while I am training!! That way I am all pumped up and pissed off!!

We are actually going to try and have another one next year… I too want to be able to stay very active in my children’s life!!

I'm more inclined to go by some of the dictionary definitions of 'train':
to make proficient by instruction and practice;
to treat or manipulate so as to bring into some desired form, position, direction, etc;
to undergo discipline and instruction.

I work out to train myself to lift heavier. A 'powerlifter' is someone who trains specifically the squat, bench press and deadlift with the goal of increasing their single-rep max. The term 'weightlifter' is reserved for those who perform the Oly lifts. Obviously, one can be a weight lifter without being a weightlifter.

Define 'bodybuilder' as you will but, for the word to be reasonably usable, bear in mind that there really is no good reason to define it such that the compound term 'competing bodybuilder' should be tautologous.

I always think of a body-builder as one who lifts and diets to build a specific physique. I know a lot of runners who dont go in races but they still train to improve their times. For me there are bodybuilders and competitive bodybuilders.

I teach karate and not all my students compete but they ALL train hell yah I make sure of that :)

so then, we have those who train and those who compete.

My thoughts on the matter (partially) as well as Alwyn Cosgrove's (he's a world class strength coach):

I totally disagree…

A body Builder is one who conducts his life in such a way as to produce significant muscle mass… Diet, Training, Sleep all must be up to par. To say one must compete to receive a title is bunk….

I am also a Martial Artist…. I do not compete… I could but determining who is the toughest has never appealed to me!!

Both arts require Dedication, Determination and Drive…

Seems like this thread has turned into more of what do these two words mean to you. Weightlifter or Bodybuilder. I agree with heavy D on this one. There are bodybuilders and competitive bodybuilders in my book. I use the word train because to me it means that I am not normal in the sense of how society says I should be. I dont fit in when I am walking down the street. Charts that say what my weight should be at a current height tell me im obese. I laugh as I look in the mirror and see a nice V shape coming along. I dont fit into shirts right that other males my height fit into. What I mean by that is if I wear anything bigger than a large at most designer clothing stores abercrombie, american eagle, holister things like that then the shirt will be down to my damn ankles haha.

I like this and its weird to others because they blend right into society. A bodybuilder to me is someone that goes in the gym with no intentions of socializing. We train with extreme intensity. We tend to always train heavy but we train with intelligence and we train diligently. We dont just toss weights around wrecklessly. We leave our ego at the door and we are a rare breed. We look at ourselves in the mirror not out of vanity but to make sure that our pump is coming along and to make sure that we are staying symmetrical and that we are building a powerful physique. A weightlifter is something that I used to be. I used to walk in the gym shoot the shit with people if I knew people there and I didnt train with that much intensity. Didnt look at myself in the mirror didnt pay attention to anything didnt pay attention to diet drank lots of beer ate pizza and cookies. Tossed weights around and said hell yeh im getting gains. Didnt train with intelligence or diligence.

To me someone starts out as a weight lifter and gains more experienc and knowledge and becomes a bodybuilder. Some people dont care what they look like so I wouldnt consider them a bodybuilder. Bodybuilders worry about being symmetrical and having nice vascularity and a nice V shape.

Long post I know but this is a cool thread. Interesting to see what another persons interpretation of these words mean. This shits my oppinion some of you may not agree with me and thats cool with me.

Train·ing----
–noun 1. the education, instruction, or discipline of a person or thing that is being trained.
We are all training, to get big. :chomp:

Competitive bodybuilding was the first (or one of the first) "extreme sports" in my opinion. The 20 weeks of dieting is extreme, then the shit that goes on the week prior to getting on stage is again "extreme" and THEN the funny part---painting all that crap on your body so you can look as brown as me! LOL man it is just not a sport that every "body-builder" can do.

I don't miss a day in the gym ever, unless I am sick which is very, very rare. I treat "lifting" like my way of life depends on it. To me "just lifting weights" is not sincere enough to achieve my personal goals. My personal goals require lifting, dieting, and supplementation which all include higher than normal discipline and spending of money.

I do not participate in public competitions. Although, I do compete with myself daily. Therefore I train.

I refer "going to the gym" as training altogether. I am training to drop bodyfat and gain muscle, and steadily make gains. I "train" to fight my genetically limited metabolism and to finally get to the BF% that i will be comfortable at. Lifting weights seems casual to me. Training is more a dedicated term I would use to describe what I do in the gym :artist:

I call it "working out" and refer to certain lifts as "working chest" or "working back". 20 years ago when a workout partner first said to me "I trained chest yesterday" I burst out laughing because it sounded so :rainbow: ......it still does to me!

I hear that shit all the time "I'm training" or "where do you train". And these people are so serious you would think they are training to become The Heavyweight Champion of the World. I also get a good laugh from the ones that say their in the gym to train and therefore cannot talk to anyone. If you are really training for some sort of an event or competition then fine. But if not relax guys and gals, your just lifting weights. Your simply working out to get in better shape.

I do not come to the gym to be social…

I come to TRAIN.. Train for what you ask???
To train in a manner where my muscles will have no other option but to GROW…. I train like my life depends on it!! Know why?? Because someday it might.

Lets use your analogy for my Martial Arts training… I do not go in there and Practice Karate / Aikido/ Kobudo no way… I bust my ass just like I do in the gym.. There is no talking as it is not a social event either. There is discipline involved.. I have discipline coming out my ass!! I train like my life depends on it!! Know why?? Because someday it might.

In the gym I do not have time to entertain the ladies or answer the question “What supplements do you take?” There is work to be done and I aim to get er done!!!

Me personally I call it training. because lifting builds discipline. you stick to a routine in wich is very very hard work and you do your best each time. it builds confidence mentally and physically as well. i also do a boxing workout 2hrs in the morning I call that training but I am training for no event. Its good to do physical exercises for the mind body and soul. hah

Taoiron, I'm not trying to be an ass, but what is it that you do that your life may depend on your workouts.
I have done a lot of work where I definitely had to rely on my size and strength.
I am approached a lot with questions while in the gym. I have no problem talking with people and I always get in a good workout.
I have been to the gyms in Venice many times and met and worked out along side some of the biggest names in bodybuilding. And those guys would actually carry most of the conversation.
The only time I won't talk is in the middle of a set.
It all just boils down to ones personality.

I workout to stay in shape I still like to race I practice on the track to get into riding shape because it is totally different, In the winter i lift and like to consider it off season training or conditioning. At 49 i'm training to be 35 so call it what you want just keep liftin

OMG!!! Why are some people so uptight that they care by what term people use for what they do at the gym. Shake yourself...there are so many other things in the world to worry about that make this possibly one of the most TRIVIAL posts I have ever wasted my time reading.

Bro…. I don’t think you are being an ass at all…….. I guess for me I need to train at a very intense level.. That is what works. I thrive on intensity and structure.. Admittedly most would probably think I live a pretty boring life!!

The gym is church to me.. I take it very serious.. Maybe to serious for some!!

So to your question about why I train like my life depends on it!!! I will never (I hope) be a victim.. I am also a victim’s advocate (if you are interested in what that truly means, email me)… My size, strength and fighting skills are something that I may need someday! If I do have to call upon it, I intend to be ready and able. If / when I do have to put hands on someone I guarantee they will never forget it!!

I think you are right…. Ones personality dictates how he handles distractions in the gym.. For me, they are avoided at all cost!
