training to failure or not?

Just want to know a few things about training to failure as i dont want to risk overtraining which i have done in the past and it set me back a few months! Is it best to train to failure on every set for bout six weeks then have a deload week or two? or say you was following a 5 x 5 routine would you make sure you get 5 x 5 without failing a rep before you up the weight? If i was train to failure with my max 5rm i no for a fact that by the 4 or 5 set theres no way i would be able to get the 5 reps out training to failure every set. So whats best to do?

Sorry but its all individual. Experienced lifters can easily assess and adjust on the fly. There is no best of anything...just what works for you.

im worried about overtraining again which set me back a bit and my lifts went down quite a bit. Im just wanting to add some more muscle mass

if your goal is to add more muscle mass then you should be eating more... not necessarily training more... also im pretty sure you can overtrain in less than 6 weeks... im pretty sure you can overtrain in one workout...

I never said i wanted to train more, i no i need to eat more to gain muscle but you also need to train correctly aswell. Im just trying to get the right advice when i start bulking again so i dont overtrain and go backwards. My preference is to train to failure on every set but doing that last time set me to an overtraining state of mind. ill give both ideas a try and see how it goes, it all goes to learning more about your body dont it, im just been a bit inpatient i think lol.

I say go with your gut! Some days your on and ready to push it and others you might need to just pump a lighter weight. Go to failure if you're feeling it dont if you're not. If you always go to failure and trash bodyparts you should probably be hitting bodyparts once a week.
