Training Instinctively

I used to get pretty anal about having a strict plan that I would follow in terms of my split and exact exercises, sets and reps. It worked, there's no doubt about that. But I was completely inflexible in terms of what I had planned to the point where it was detrimental to my training.

Now, the only thing that's set in stone is the basic principles I follow. Quite simply, maximum effort work, dynamic effort work, and working on my weaknesses thereafter with as much volume as I can fit into 45-60 minutes. I make sure everything I do has a purpose. My split might fall across five, six, seven or eight days. It just depends... For example, the past three days I trained back-to-back (two DE days and an ME day). Generally, I think I've learnt a bit more about how my body responds and I'm using that as a guide, rather than a set formula.

Where this eventually takes me I don't know, but I'm enjoying it for now.

That's the way to go, Zander. I just can't do a Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Sat split every week. Sometimes I'll work two days in a row if I feel good, sometimes I'll take extra days off. You just need a set of general principles to follow. I'm alternating bench and assistance moves on 1 day, shoulders and upper back on another day, and lower body on another. Some lower body workouts are heavy, some are dynamic. I don't set my schedule up by the calendar at all.

In the old days I used to bench on Monday, Squat on Wednesday, and drink beer on Friday...lol
