Training Goals:what are yours?

wnt2bBeast

New member
since this is such a diverse board perhaps its best if we each stated our training goals whatever they may be..of course things change as they should..we all have different goals and if we were aware of them i think we can better help each other out..

For me right now my goals are 60% strength and 40% size..although for me strength does translate into size..quite honestly i dont think i will ever return to a traditional "flex" style BB'ing routine..for that i would use 5x5..but starting in Jan i am thinking of switching to a WSB for my lower and metal militia for bench..i would really like to concentrate on getting my total up 2k would be awesome i dont know if i have that potential but i want to start training for it!

im a lot like you, id like to get stronger and bigger at the same time, they are about of equal importance.i too switched to 5x5 and it didnt work too hott on my legs while it helped the rest of my body, i still do it.id like to bring up my shoulders, traps and calves, i dont care about abs right now, im only 18.

hmmm...not sure what my goals are...probably just keep increasing all my numbers and cut a little body fat.

some basic goals of mine:
405x10 on flat barbell bench (already got 8)
365x10 on close-grip
185 for reps on barbell curls (gonna be a while)
get back into legs once i heal, then get 315x20
315x10 on military
185x10 on upright rows
stack on lats for 10 reps
3 sets of 10 wide-grip pull-ups
catch my back up to chest, arms, and shoulders.

ENOUGH!

Mine are to be big, lean and strong. I weight them all about equally, so I probably have more bodybuilding-based goals than powerlifting.

I am 208lbs @ 11%ish right now. I have a 3 cycle plan to get to 240+@8%. That would rock, but once I'm there I know I'll want MORE! :D

im jealous...you bastard!

i want to gain strength first, and size later. once i get a good base of power, and can bench 150% of my bodyweight a couple times, squat 2x bodyweight a couple of times, and do pullups with at least 100 pounds hanging from me; then i will worry about mass. but by the time i can do those numbers i dont think size will be a problem.

Goals of mine:

-get bodyweight up to 165-170lbs
-bench 275
-military press 135x10
-squat 300
-skull crush 115x10
-pullovers 3x10 w/125lbs
-close CoC#2
-platepinch 4 10s

all this will take awhile to accomplish though.

three goals:
first: i want to get stronger at bench mostly, but also deadlifts next and i guess squats. maybe.

second: i want to get stronger in general

third: i DON"T want to gain size. i want to accomplish 1 and 2 and stay the same size or get smaller.
:)

great goals..i know you can do whatever you put your mind to!!!

Size and strength and getting cut for me. I think most people are after this apart from power lifters.
Not looking for massive size myself, just wanna be well defined and bigger than I am now especially for my chest, legs and ass!!
As far as strength goes, I want to be able to lift a lot more than I can now as I think that I have the potential as everyone does and it seems unnatural to me that I am not living up to it. Off course we all have potential eventually to lift even ridicuolous weights and maybe I'll also get there one day but amazing weights is not what my goals are, just to be able to lift for reps a decent amount nothing beyond natural...
Also, I have back issues and a protuding disk, so I have to be very carefull and take it slow. Getting stronger both on heavy weights and lighter weights for higher reps (endurence) makes my life easier and better and keep my back safer. The problem is off course attaining these goals without injuring myself further. So I am always being carefull and it sucks at times but I spent my first 8-10 months of working out really not pushing any limits and now I have been working out for about 14 months, and have started pushing my limits as of about 5 months or so ago and it feels great!

Long post I know and I could go on but I'll save you from it, I think you guys should get where I'm coming from now :)

Great to see everyone's goals!! My first goal is always to KILL THAT SHIT!! I train for both size and strength. Some short term goals:

*20" arms cold (1.5" to go)
*50" chest (1" away)
*28" legs (2" away)
*16" forearms (about 2" away.Havent been training them seperately)
*16" calves (2" away)
*Bigger Fuckin Traps!
*405lb Bench Press (10lbs away)
*405lb Incline Press (Depends on the bench and technique I use)

Longer term goals:

*22" arms cold (3.5" to go)
*60" chest
*18" forearms
*500lb bench (raw)

The whole process never ends though, cuz Ill NEVER be satisfied! Deadlifts arent in my goals now, since Im not sure when or if Ill be able to do them again. Ive maxed the lat pulldown stack for 17 reps and row the 150lb dumbells for 33 reps, so its hard to set goals with those until I can access heavier equipment. May need to use the barbell or t-bar rows more often. I plan to take both strength and size as far as I can. Id like to do it naturally for a while aside from supplements.

Things like this tend to happen when you keep getting bigger and stronger as i have been for the last 6 years, so the goals have to keep climbing too.

The main things i need to really focus on and maybe train twice a week are back, bis, and legs.

lol... i couldn't stay like that for 5 seconds before toppling onto my face.

My goal is to gain strength.

Goals:
Squat 800+
Deadlift 800+
Bench 500+
Push press 405+
Rack pull 1000+

I'd also like to get my bodyweight to about 315-320 with low teens for bodyfat. Sitting at 305 right now with mid to upper teens bodyfat.

All in all I don't care how I look as long as I am stronger.

Cheers,
Scotsman

slavik, i didnt know you were a breaker! ive had those same goals for a few years. got the back tuck, got planches (was short lived- damn hard, and im having to work back up to it) and never got airflaires.

planches are sick- ever heard of a ball planche? its easy if you can press your weight a few times. just crouch down knees on chest, put your hands on the floor, lean over, and start doing pushups without your knees or feet hitting the ground. best way to work towards planches IMO. just lean forward and kick the legs out and viola!

thats awesome bro..youll make it!!!

I dont want to get any larger but I would like to increase my strength. Im 240lb 6'2
currently-flat bench 485 2x6 goal-565 2x6
bent over rows-315 2x6 -405 2x6
dumbell preacher curls -80 2x6 -100 2x6
front squats(free weight of course)-425 2x6 goal-700 2x6

Current goals

dips + 4 plates for 5 x 5
squat 495 for 5 x 5
stiffleg deadlift 495 5 x 5
chins + 90 for 5 x 5

Some I've already done, some I've exceeded in the past but I want to do them all at once, in the same training cycle. My training is pretty much just those lifts now...

Yeah im just starting to do flips now, Im finsihing backhandspring, going to start working on backtuck soon.

Yeah i tried ball planches for a while. Ive been using the assited dip machine at the gym now. I use it to support my feet (ive got about 25lbs of support right now) and then lean forward and pull everything up and try to get the platform to raise off the ground. I think im going to try and do it with one leg hooked in the cable machine and then lower the assitance as i get better.
Right now i can hold them with one leg out straight, and the other leg about half way out.

Yeah planches crazy, kudos for gettin that down. I dont know if you need to do them to do russians (thats what we call them here, but im talking about the planche float kujo and alot of gymnasts do) or not.

sub 10% bodyfat, 405lb BP, 500lb squat & DL, look good naked.

you have to have planches to do russians. they are just planche pushups. no elbows in the gut right? kujo is tiny man, he weights like 115 or 110 wet

thats how i felt, but worse, cause i'm female.
i was so resistant to getting a shirt for so many reasons.
mainly i thought what a joke i'd look like at the time, putting this thing on so i can get my bench up to something i felt i should be able to do anyway, BUT... its protective of your shoulders and can help your raw bench too.
there are different shirts- you might start off with an inexpensive one that just gets you used to using one, then move up to the more serious ones- there are places to get them used if you know your size, measurements.

LOL..
listen... do NOT NOT NOT think you have to win before you enter- i know you've never been to a meet- you'd be AMAZED at the fact that EVERY single lifter is cheered on. the point really is NOT to win- its to do better than you did before.
think about the NY marathon.
very few people enter to win. they enter to do it and there are people lined up along the whole way to help strangers and cheer you on. the fact that you did it is the important thing, not winning. thats like a powerlifting meet.
next time there is one in our area- we'll go. you'll LOVE it.

yes, eventually i want to compete. but i am at least a year out from doing that. i am in the military, and i will be living on what you could consider a "secluded island" called Diego Garcia, also known as Chagos Island, located off the coast of India for all of next year. so i wont be able to compete while there. but i want to get a shirt, and start working with one, so that i can get comfortable with it.
what my ultimate goal with Power Lifting is to get a very respectable total before i get out of the military (i have 3 years, 3 months left on my contract). when i get out, i am going back to school. i want to either try walking on to the football team of wherever i enroll at, or at least be a part of the team, and work with their strength training program.
as far as not wanting to embarass yourself. i have been to 2 meets just to watch, and you would never feel embarassed at a meet. one thing that i noticed is that it is nothing like body building. with BBer's, they are all out for themself. with PLers they are all there to help each other out. they all cheer each other on. there is a lot of comradere.

what type of shirt would you reccommend? also, how do you figure out your size? and what brand of shirt? sorry for all the questions.

i have the exact same feeling about getting one (you said that your felt that you would thought that you would look like a joke.) i get stares bad enough when i pull out the bands and either do my speed work with them, or when i do a suspended bar for lock outs. i can only imagine how people will look at me when i put the shirt on, and my arms stick out like i am a zombie. or when i ask someone to help me put it on or take it off. but oh well, i guess you just got to say "f@ck it" and not think about others while you are on your quest for strength.

i was the ONLY woman at my last gym that lifted weights and i stood out like a sore thumb. i had a major fear of being looked at, and then i had to find someone to stuff me into this weird contraption, stay with me the entire time i lifted, then help me out.
all so i can lift a whopping 200-205. the same weight some kid next to me would be benching. with a cold.
But, who cares. you aren't there to impress anyone, and really, if the places were reversed- you wouldn't think anyone looked funny- you'd wanna know what it was, how it was helping, and how you could get it.
anyway- as far as a shirt recommendation- i'm in no position to help. i have an inzer poly open back shirt that was custom made for me cause my measurements aren't standard. people will recommend what works best for them, but it may not for you- i think it depends on what kind of bencher (if you arch, and where you bring the bar to).
you can always call some of the manufacturers (inzer, karin, crains) and ask what they would recommend, then decide, or see if you can find it used.

I have been to several powerlifting meets. Not everybody in them is outrageously strong. There's always who comes just to bench so they squat like 135 lbs just to get it overwith.

You can never embarass yourself as long as you give it all you have got. Everyone starts somewhere and trust me plifters remember their roots and are very supportive of each other.

your right..i agree with sugarplum and you..the Pl'ers i have met have been some of the most friendliest people who are willing to share their expertise with you..i just wish i were in a gym with a bunch of PL'ers!!!

My goal is to get a nice base then just keep going. Right now I am only like 86lbs 16 year old and 5'2". Chest is getting way better then before, but my arms aren't doing so good. I think I need a new routine. Also I would like to get a nicer back. Basically I think my goals are to train till I fuckin die and make every part on my bosy better then what it is now.

wow man, 86 pounds is small. not to insult you, but you got some work ahead of you, but to me, the work is half the fun of bodybuilding. good luck.

EAT a LOT.
try to stick to good, healthy foods but EAT. steak, chicken, turkey, fish, MILK (lots of it), veggies, fruit, etc.
good luck!

My goals are improving my strength and overall conditioning. I'm going to be starting strongman type training just to give me a change of pace, and to keep things challenging.

Yes It is small I agree. But I gained 6pounds within 3weeks so I am going to eat more and more.

I have no fruits or veggies but I do have lots of meat. Also milk makes me vomit.

I have a good friend who is 5' tall and about 116lbs. I have seen him bench 225 and he recently set a state record here. So just keep training and make your goals come to you.

id like to start competing soon, powerlifting definatly, maybe some BB shows. need to bring my bench up though, my squat and deads are decent for my size. by the time im 22(next summer) id like to try some comps.

goals for next summer/fall:
bench: 400 shirted (current best is 355)
deadlift: 585 (done 495x3)
squat: 650 (done 585 w/ wraps and belt)
military press: 225x8-10 (current 225x2)
barbell curl:135 3 sets of 8 (do 125 4-5sets of 6)
bentover row 315x6 (current 270x6)

as far as my physique, i look ok, want to be around 200 7-8% (long term i wanna be about 220 7%) im at 187-190 9-10% now. arms and chest are my worst parts i believe. i gave up on calves, they are a joke.

physique goals
arms 17.5 now 16
chest ? just know it needs more size
forearms could use another inch
legs more definition in hams, calves are pathetic could use +2"
back wider lats
waist is around 33" want to get down to 30-31"

dats about it for me right now

get bigger for now, then get leaner, then get stronger!

end goal is to weigh 215 at 8%

bench 350
squat 450
dead 550

everything else is just about looks, dont care as much about numbers

Peace
