Training animals~~~~~

Fear is the only way to train a cat that I know of. They will do whatever they want unless they learn to fear the consequences.

cats are trainable,

takes a lot more time and patience, and must be started when they are young, and they mustv have the right temperment.....but I have read a book that shows you how to train a cat how to use a toilet.

Whoa. Like in Meet the Parents?

You only think you're training the cat; the cat is training you.

Cats are to damn stupid to train.
Hmmm...

Call a trained dog over and he'll stop rolling in the stinky spot in the yard for a moment, come running at a full sprint with a full doggy smile, tounge hanging out, tail waging relentlessly.

Call a cat to your side and, if the mood strikes the cat, he or she may casually glance at you, calmly assess whether you have anything to offer at the moment, and choose to either investigate further or remain.

Don't get me wrong. I love dogs and I do not think they are "stupid." I think they are dogs - like people they have different levels of maturity and autonomy. It just so happens that cat enjoys a much more developed level of autonomy.

Dogs have been bred by man to serve for thousands of years. This has also created a VERY strong bond between dogs and man. It has nothing to due with intelligence or true independence but thousands of years of breeding combined with the social nature of dogs.

A sentry dog and his handler are on patrol. A VC infiltrator is spotted by the dog and the handler is shot. The dog immediatly attacks the infiltrator and is shot in the face and yet continues to attack until the VC manages to escape, the dog returns to his handler to protect him even though seriously wounded.

A sentry cat would likely bolt at the sound of a firearm discharge. :D

True.

However, a sentry cat of the appropriate size may be quite effective if hungry. :)

JavaGuru good call on the intellegence issue. We humans like to believe we have a monopoly on intellegence. In reality we would neither make smart cats or dogs. Cat smarts are cat smarts, dog smarts are dog smarts, while people smarts are people smarts...

I don't think that it has anything to do with intelligence, it's more to do with their personality. :)
