The big $$$ ultimately finds it way back to the Japanese parent company.
Using final assembly as a guide misses the very large technical community that is supported by the U.S. manufacturers even at today’s employment levels. The transplants do have technical facilities in the U.S., but their presence is nowhere near that of the U.S. manufacturers in terms of the number of people and workload.
