no really, Im serious

anyone in here have veggie gardens?
I kill tomatoes like its my job

so, my dad buys these strawberry topsy turvys for the kids because he had a tomato one and its basically like a hanging strawberry pot

so thats cool...I got the kids some strawberry plants and I already have a great established strawberry patch so either way this should work out fine.

well...I was picking up seeds and plants for the vegetable garden and saw upside down tomato hangers and I'm like..."why not" I kill tomatoes every other way I've tried to grow em so I'll give this a shot.

so have any of you jerks used one of these things? did I just waste ten bucks on organic potting soil and a cpl of upside down hangers? plus another ten bucks on a hanger plant stand for em for the deck or what??

I had some a couple years ago, and they worked great, but I hung them in a spot that was a pain in the ass to water.

I have a greenhouse for the weed...I think I need a better greenhouse tho...and some good drip waterers

this is their major downfall right? the need to constantly water them? I think this might work out fine for the kids because they're ocd about overwatering plants..and I put them right next to one of the garden hoses

Yeah, they need to be watered once or twice a day since it all just drains out.

did you grow cherry tomatoes in em or what? because I think I made a mistake...I put cherry tomatoes in one and a yellow hybrid tomato in another but I just picked up a roma type tomato today so maybe I should swap out the yellow tomato?

now I just need two cherry trees, one golden delicious apple tree to cross pollinate my other apple tree, a way to keep squirrels off my nectarines, my new blueberry bushes to thrive, pick up 9 boxwood hedge plants (saw little ones for a sweet price at lowes), pick up three decent everbloom hydrangeas andmaybe a few new rhodies and Im done with landscaping of shrubs and trees this yr.

finish planting my lilacs, roses, larkspur, splitting my echinacia (sp?), splitting my hostas, pick up a few new asian lillies...eyeball buying some peonies...and get my veggie garden in this week..I'll be done!

Had it, killed em, I forget to water so I bought those faggoty aqua globes but I forget to fill them fml, I have about a 10ft long planter in my porch that had easter lilies and purple hyacynth (sp?)which I killed as well, same with my begonia planter, black lily planter and hanging baskets FML, Poor spider plant is a trooper though

omg, get a bag of "soil moist" nan

you're over and underwatering...the soil moist will fix that
shits cheap ..one bag will do like 50 planters

I bought tomato-tone instead this yr...egg shells never worked out for me

I put them in the compost pile regularly tho

speaking of which...anyone ever try compost starter or anything like that? The clippings, weeding, small tree twigs etc have finally exceeded the speed which my compost pile composts..Im almost out of usable compost

Is it warm enough when you plant them?

Have you been planting them deep enough?

Those are the only 3 things I can think of that would fuck them up if you're watering enough.

This shitty myrtle and purple flower thing is what lives, I have an emty trellis were my morning glory, raspberry and grape all failed... Nice black thumb

you did just remind me tho...I want some dwarf oranges and some lemon trees for my sunroom

the only place I know that sells them is the garden center I quit working for

I get leaf mold, I get foot rot, the stems rot out

there is seriously nothing I haven't done to tomatoes

we have blight issues here...everyone always said that it was something in the soil and when it rained hard and splashed up on the tomatoes, they ended up getting blighted...so we bought hangers, planted tomatoes, followed the directions...they got blight too...fuck it.

I do have a sour orange and an awesome grapefruit tree FULL of fruit so the useless shit lives fine

Then definitely don't use any chemicals on them.

Have you tried planting the disease resistant types of tomatoes and are they still failing?

nan can't cook or clean or take care of plants..

wtf can you do nan?

A. My food is awesome!
B. Everything is fucking sand here, our soil sucks and I have a bunch of huge oaks that not only block 100% Sun all day but aldi who's acidity kill everything planted around.
C. I fucking hate cleaning
D. What shirlene said ;)

yes, and Im trying like four different varieties this year...and the tomato-tone isn't chemical...
I don't use anything chemical for anything for my plants

I have the craziest compost pile you've ever seen and I use coast of maine, bumper crop, organic choice and espoma products on my stuff
if I ever get bugs I go to the garden center locally that sells bugs to eat the bugs..lol

Have you tried buying tomatoes still on the vine and duct taping them to the half dead plant?

no, but ive considered it

I had decent patio tomatoes one yr but every time the fruit started to get to be allllmost full size, Kayka would pluck it off to show me *sigh*

Holy fuck @ teh horrible plants in this thread.

I always end up with too much shit and have to give a ton of it away

Anyone gonna need a fugg load of tomatos, peppers, grapes, watermelon, squash and okra?

That's usually what I end up with too much of. Cucumbers too. Fml

Put down a bottom layer and fill with organic soil and take care of your shit and you'll be growing like a mofo in 6 months

I have a picture of a tomato plant I had to tie off to a wooden dowell that reached almost 14 feet and the hillbilly small town newspaper came to take pictures lololololol

Now I just grow candy tomatos or cherry tomatos wtf ever you prefer to call them. I quit fuggn with the full size because I had too many go bad and start to smell from not being eaten. I don't eat them except on my salads and the occasional burger

Ok I give up on you. Tomatoes don't like you.

Lolol

Organic soil ftw.

Try growing them in a 4x4 box full of OS and crushed eggshells. Water lightly directly on the leaves twice a day

last year I had HUGE pumpkins gorgeous excellent pumpkins and tons of them. No small task for the short season here.

They all started to turn orange and really look good, no rot, nice size...good lookin pumpkins

the deer ate them...every friggin last one of em

Never tried growing pumkins.

To keep deer out, string up yellow police/caution tape around the garden

They hate the way it flashes in the wind

two are in the topsy turvys already...the other four victims...I mean plants..I'll put in one bed (which is organic soil already) and dress with the tomato-tone (organic 3-3-3) and top dress
accordingly

I'll also add whats left of my worm casings to the bed (about three wheel barrows full). My entire compost pile is worm casings

I'll see how it goes

and yeah aphids...thats what I'm sayin. I can grow seriously anything except tomatoes

Plus the way you kill off those got dam tomatos you need crime scene tape anyways

LOLOLOL

I actually got some liquid fence (recommended heavily by the garden center I worked for) and some motion detector sprinklers...I figured this would be good for deer and kids who wanna nibble

For the kids try a .243 or .270 winchester with a high grain round

Not a huge calibre, but gets the point across

A BLT sounds fucking awesome right now. There is a soul food joint in Oceanside that makes them with fried green tomatoes.

There is a badass pizza place in oceanside I think it's called frankies or something.

Little red place with wooden benches and a vintage look to it. Newspaper clippings on the wall

You know of it?

There's a joint on El Camino Real, right on the Oceanside/Carlsbad border called That Pizza Place. It's been there for like 40 years and it's never changed once since I've been there. Dirty wood picnic tables. Newspaper clipping and signs (and shit) all over the walls, and trophies & pics of all the teams they sponsor. It's the best pizza I've ever had though.

Nvm just googled it. That's it. Place is bomb! You go there much?
Yeah, I used to go there at least once a week. I'm trying to eat cleaner these days, so I haven't been there in a while. It's kind of a pain in the ass to go there too. They sponsor dozens of kids teams, so it's always packed.

Yeah they have state championship trophies and newspaper clips all over the place. They sponsor some boss teams it would seem.

They put like 4 inches of cheese on your pizza. Best I have ever had no doubt. We'll have to have a meat up there when I visit my Carlsbad/SD/Temecula/OS friends

this will never happen

I spend a lot of time at Prohibition Brewing in Vista these days. The TJ burger with cajun fries and an oatmeal stout sounds pretty good right now.
