The Beatles and Nirvana are not only not overrated, they are not rated highly enough. Both bands left a wake that rippled through the whole music industry. I don't think Radiohead is overrated either, they are hugely creative and melodic. If only they'd get off that electronica kick they've been on for the last few years. "The Bends" and "OK Computer" are amazingly good pop-rock albums.

They pale in comparison to the Beatles and should have retired 10 years ago (at least)
How many albums and how many hits?
Compared to the Beatles it's very very low
Still their popularity is still amazingly high

kethnaab said:Okay, this is nuts. Those bands didn't just "become popular", they completely changed music. I don't particularly like U2, but I recognize the influence they had on the music industry. I also don't particularly like Nirvana, they're okay, but they had an obviously powerful influence on the music industry.
Led Zeppelin (along with Ozzy/Black Sabbath) CREATED AN ENTIRE GENRE OF MUSIC. So they get removed from that list, period.
The Beatles released so many classic songs that they have become a part of culture for anyone growing up in the 60s, 70s and the 80s. They get removed also.
I disagree with the U2/Nirvana selection, but I can accept arguments.
In no way, shape or form can I accept Led Zeppelin or the Beatles being on this list of "overrated". You simply cannot overrate the best.
Metallica basically pioneered and created a very strong niche within a genre (the "thrash" metal genre within heavy metal, which was created by Led Zeppelin and Ozzy). Master of Puppets was their last awesome album. Their next 2 were good and okay. After that, meh.
Someone said System of a Down. Again, you may not *like* the music, but credit them with having a 100% original sound. They obviously have talent (Even if they use it in rather bizarre ways). Besides, SOAD is not all that popular, are they?
as for Celine Dion vs. Britney Spears, Celine at least has a good voice. Britney has shitty music and a shitty voice.
and whomever said the Eagles were overrated is just nuts!
[/rant]
perkele said:They didn't plan to change the music, it's just a thing that happened. It doesn't make them special. They didn't declare they're gonna change the music when they put out their first album. It would have happen with some other band if there never would have been those bands.
perkele said:Artists are overrated when they're ranked higher than they should based on their actual music and musical talent.
The critics never dropped acid then. Like trance/ Hardhouse is for (but not only) X users. Makes sense to me if they hated LZ, cause I did till I was talking to the moon when "Dazed and Confused" came on...then I understood.Mr. dB said:When they were current, Led Zep were hated by "the critics".

perkele said:Bands that are not rated high can't be considered as overrated. Nirvana and Beatles are rated very high.
sublime35 said:Oh no you didn't!! But really how are they o/r'd? No one talks about them and only people I know then even know who they are know them from "What I got" or "Santaria" which are two of they're worst songs IMO, that hardly show they're "different" side. They're music is like none other. Bands like ReelbigFish, 3311 tried to copy their style, but it didn't work.
As far as Nickelback and Linkin Park, you have to listen to all of their music, not just the radio. Linkin Park live sounds just as good as their cd. They have true talent. Chester has an awesome voice and their DJ is off the hook.
Nickelback - honestly, if this was about 3 months ago, I would agree, they fuckin' suck...way over rated...they still are a little bit, for the amount of good songs they have on thier cds. That new "Photograph" and "Savin' Me" crap is just that, CRAP. You have to actually listen to their cd's and skip through the slow, despressing bullshit to find really good songs. "Follow you home" and "rockstar" on their new cd are fuckin' awesome. "where do I hide" and "never again" were good ones from Silver Side up.
Metallica is way over rated. Their shit all sounds the same, albeit a few songs. Yeah they are def. differnent. When one of their songs comes on the radio, you know it's them, but a lot of their stuff sounds the same. I likemetallica to a point, but definately would say they are over rated because they have no change.
We could sit here an and argue all day long about who we think is over rated because we all have different tastes.
Kiss, Zep. Aerosmith...def. not over rated.
The Rolling Stones need to DIE!

the rest of your list is pretty solid, especially the doors. blech.
pdaddy said:Joy division....What did they do? Tell me, what did they ever do? Isn't it only the death of the singer and one song (Love Will Tear Us Apart)? Plus New Order, but it is a different band.
And for the Vlelvet Underground, AKA The fathers and a mother of the blacklips. Did they really do a great job for the psychedelic hippie culture? Some fine songs like Candy Says, but that is not enough when the band is to blame for a zillion 'gloomy' and 'evil' crap bands and records.
dullboy said:eagles created a new sound and the fact that every member had a successful solo career says a lot about the talent level for the band.
Mr. dB said:Every member? Tell me about Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon's successful solo careers? That's half of the original lineup. Or the replacement guy, Don "Where is he now" Felder? There were only two successful solo careers spun off from The Eagles - Henley and Frey - and one guy, Joe Walsh, who had a solo career before joining.
They didn't create a new sound, either. The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, those are the people who created the country-rock sound that The Eagles exploited.
dullboy said:you're arguing backwards. lol
henley and frey created the sound that defines the eagles. they're talented songwriters.
maybe you just don't like the eagles. that's ok. you're entilted to your own taste. but it's silly to say that they're overrated just because you don't like them.
Mr. dB said:But they couldn't compete with Disco, so they took the path of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and became overtly, calculatedly commercial.
I can't decide if The Doors are overrated or not. Morrison was a horrible singer, who would have been kicked out of any other band. And most of his "poetry" is hopelessly puerile. The musicians all sounded like some sort of Holiday Inn Lounge act, they were so lightweight they didn't even have a bass player. Yet the combination of elements kind of worked. Almost. Sometimes.
Mr. dB said:No, I'm disputing your point that "all the members had successful solo careers", or that they pioneered anything.
They jumped the shark at "One Of These Nights". Prior to that they were a very good little country-rock band. But they couldn't compete with Disco, so they took the path of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and became overtly, calculatedly commercial.

thewanderer690 said:What did you say Morrison was a horrible singer??? Morrison had a style that was entirely his own. I guess you would think Lou Reed was a horrible singer as well? Or Eric Burden? That band sucks without him singing plus he sounds great in almost all his songs.
Mr. dB said:Morrison's singing only worked because his songs were written around his vocal limitations. I bet he couldn't have made his way through a Lennon/McCartney composition to save his life. Like I said above, at times The Doors were able to transcend their limitations, but not always. Ever seen any live Doors video? Morrison was dreadful a lot of the time.
