There is no new music out there. Listening to a current hits radio staion these days sounds like a classic hits radio station. All kinds of performers are all covering old songs! I heard 3 old songs in a row from the 70s on a top forty station just because they are being re-done today by current artists ( I use the term "artists" pretty loosely).
Myself, I grew up on rock music, and thats what I listen to if I have a choice. Not the crappy rock that comes out these days, but mostly stuff from my heyday and beyond. Tom Petty included.
But I don't have anything negative to say about other types of music, such as hip-hop. its a new type of music and some of it is creative and catchy to my ancient ears. The reason I have a open mind about music is this:
Back in the day people hated rock-n-roll when it first came out. Hated the shit out of it. They called it devil music and many people hated it just because it was black influenced and had its roots in the blues. If they had their way, rock n roll wouldn't have made it; instead, country music would have ruled the world like it ruled theirs.
I'd rather not be one of those types of people.
It does seem that rock music has run its course, ruling the music business for over 40 years. Just like country music was before it.
Now hip hop and R&B and rap will branch out into other creative types and get bigger and more popular, probably becoming dominated by white artists over time like rock music did. Kids will grow up with it like my generation did with rock music.
In several decades, it will burn itself out like rock is doing now, and will get replaced by something new that the kids will love. The people who grew up with hip hop will be saying, "This new shit is crap!! I'll take old school hip-hop over it any day!"
And they will all feel old because the music they grew up with can only be heard on the "classic" radio stations.
Yes, it will happen.
