Today a foreign woman handed me a Xmas card...

It's much tougher but not impossible. People facing adversity function daily in jobs.
I was plagued with agoraphobia for many years and was housebound for 7 months. I could not even open a blind cause anxiety was making me so ill.
I got out of my rut and after some therapy I went and got a job. I was terrified! I had a handicap, I believe, worse that deafness! But I got off my butt and got a job. That was 20 yrs ago and I never looked back.
Any employer that would fire a deaf person should be and can be sued. Maybe your friend was not a good worker.
Serious C, there are a ton of jobs you can get where you do not need to hear. I have a 13 yr old niece in a wheelchair dying of an illness and she goes to regular high school every day w/out an excuse and with a smile. IF she can do that, then good golly miss molly, a deaf person can get a job
I agree with you - there are jobs people can get, and yes, it is not impossible, never said it was. I am making the point that they just can't run out and get any job like you can. Also, you bring up agoraphobia. There is something you can do about that, you can take drugs, you can go to therapy, etc, etc. A deaf person is deaf. Period. I give major props to your neice, I do, but not everyone is the same. Some people have stronger dispositions and some people just lose hope. That doesn't make them lazy people that we should just shit on. Especially, the ones with a disability like being deaf.

I disagree

I cannot get any job I want. I can't go out and get a pro baseball job, I can't go get a CEO job of a company. I know my limits and weaknesses.

We currently have a deaf guy who plays on our softball team. He works for the telephone company doing field work and makes good money from what I've witnessed.

Deaf BEGGARS are weak and chose to gain sympathy for their disability as an easy way out. It's as simple as that.

No company is going to discriminate against somebody or FIRE them simply because they are deaf. They can find employment.

Agreed....some people are stonger than others. But ya got to at least try.
I do think ppl that beg for money are also not mentally well either.
I am all for welfare for those that are not capable. Your friend seems capable. Maybe the beggers are not.
I respect all people, I just have a tough time respecting the "takers" of society"
And I need to disagree with you on one thing...My anxiety is a life long affliction. I will suffer panic attacks my entire life, I just know how to live with it now.

Not right now you couldn't - but because you are without a disability, if you would have worked harder you could have become a baseball player. But if your saying that you have bad eyes, or that you have weak joints or bad knees so you cannot be a professional baseball player, then you are saying the same thing I am. You are saying that no matter how hard you worked at it, you could never be a baseball player because there is something wrong with you. Now - think about that thing being something HUGE, like you cannot hear things. Makes living life a hell of a lot tougher. And do you really believe your last sentence? Seriously?

I guess I just want people to have a little more compassion for others and not automatically assume that because they are on a street corner in filthy clothes begging for food, that they are a drunk, drug addict, lazy ass. Some are, but not all.

Agreed 100 percent. IN FACT, ALOT of the homeless people have real major mental problems that have either gone undetected or have been found but the person doesn't have the money/resources to fix. My psychology teacher's day time job was to look after mentally ill homeless people for the state. The number of people and the stories he told, it just broke your heart.

So if bad eyes were keeping me from being a baseball player, then I'd seek another profession. Simple as that.

And yes I believe my last sentence. If your buddy was getting fired because he was deaf (which he would not have been hired in the first place if the job required hearing) then that is a major lawsuit in his favor.

Perhaps your buddy has more issues than being deaf which is keeping him from keeping a job.

or perhaps I am biased because I do everything I am capable of myself and do not rely on others help until it is absolutely neccessary.

Most people are lazy and expect handouts. There are VERY FEW who are incapable of providing for themselves.

and lol @ your analogy relating deaf people to drug addict street beggars

thats crappy
i think im gonna start carrying applications around, and when they ask for money, im gonna put an application in their hand or in their hat
