Who cares about the healthcare debate - people may lose fox stations!!

Either your bill goes up $1 for fox or you lose it - that's what time warner faces. The biggest entertainment standoff in years continues!

Time Warner Cable and Fox negotiations nearing 11th hour - Dec. 24, 2009

We've got a hard choice | Roll Over or Get Tough
Time Warner Cable's customers could lose access to "American Idol," "the Simpsons" and some of the NFL playoffs if the cable company fails to resolve a fee standoff with Fox by Dec. 31.

That is pathetic

Hollywood gets it's money from TV not theaters - this is huge news here and could shape the future. Cable is competing with the internet and do not want to increase bills OTOH networks are competing with more smaller cable networks who are stealing their advertising dollars.

One side has to blink. I predict a 'small' increase in your bills.

Fun times. :)

more news on the latest bloodbath between hollywood, cable and the internet.

Why Apple can't kill cable

the most telling commentary i've read so far:
Look for programmers to experiment with varying programming offerings among YouTube, Amazon, Netflix and Apple based on dimensions including staggered program premiere dates, access to archives, image clarity, sharing/burning limitations, etc. For the sizable portion of the population willing to pay a premium for the whole enchilada, cable will always be there and probably remain the market preference for years to come. But that share will drop as lower-priced, lower-quality options pop up.

can you opt out of fox if you wish and just reactivate it for the NFL?? That would work for me.......or at least kill off FOX news although taking down american idol would reestablish some sense of societal viability...lol

Wouldn't work cuz FOX broadcast comes free while you're paying only for FOX Sports. That's the problem - cable and networks package things together so it's all or nothing. Disney for example charges an arm and a leg for ESPN, but other disney channels have to come along.

Now the networks want payment for those channels as well as the future of 'on-demand tv' like apple is proposing is scaring studios shitless (hollywood depends on cable revenue for it's lifeblood). It always works out i'm sure - unf. ur rates will take a hit.

than I'll just have to stop watching tv and go see NFL games at bars...:whatever:

Like I don't think they'd get that high that it would come to it.......but it would probably do our society a whole lotta fuckin good if tv became too expensive for awhile. Like a WHOLE LOTTA fuckin good. Of course guys like Plunkey wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they couldn't tivo their springer every night, but oh well......I guess "sacrifices" are in order....

I'm confused. When I lived in the Valley, basic channels (2-28) were free. Fox was channel 11. Now I pay for basic, Fox is still channel 11. So now I will lose Fox 11 for non payment of Fox "sports" channels!? That stinks!

As entertaining as Jerry is, watching you tilt windmills with horribly flawed logic is much better. RS, you are my Jerry Springer show.

Yep. Fox wants cable to pay for it's basic channels (mainy cuz their other channels have low ratings in comparison) - which cable companies do NOT wnat - for if they do, abc, nbc, etc. will do the same.

Guess swhat happens to yhour cable bill then? And gives more ammo to apple who wants to take on cable with it's tv and itunes service.

fun fun fun

Fox is a local channel here. They have their own local news broadcasts and other shit. So if Time Warner pulls it, could I not just unplug my cable and catch it on regular TV?

I will be pissed if I lose football.

the only reason this sucks is that Fox will carry the Sugarbowl on Jan. 1 (the contract deadline) & if they get dumped by Time Warner- Im Screwed!!! lol

GO GATORS!

As to that one question: yes networks are also thinking about getting rid of free broadcast via antennas and charging for them - expect your cable to rise babies. ha! :

Free broadcast TV may go way of the VHS tape - Media biz- msnbc.com
NEW YORK - For more than 60 years, TV stations have broadcast news, sports and entertainment for free and made their money by showing commercials. That might not work much longer.

I do wonder if networks in general are having trouble with advertising revenue.

TV used to be a great way to drive-home a brand in viewers' minds. Now, so many people Tivo/DVR around the commercials -- I wonder how many eyes they lost.

Also, who lets a TV push things on them anymore? I think more people pull things off the Internet. So instead of a commercial reminding someone of a brand, they probably just google what they want even if they don't plan to order it online.

If advertising is worth less in general, it's going to hit TV very hard.

web, a million cable channels, etc. are all now spreadin gout that advertising money. Instead of advertising on csi, companies now advertise on jon & kate. And since tv and advertising revenue keeps networks alive - there's a bloodbath going on. Jobs are at stake. Even EF can tell you how important advertising is.

fort. whenever i need money in life i head over to sports advertising work. I can write my own check there - money is beyond insane.
