I think the main reason why they killed it and deemed it harmful is because not only did it go after these kids but it also went after a worker a year or two ago. Kind of makes me wonder now if maybe the worker had ever done anything also. I see your point about the children thing. Correct me if I am wrong here but didn't the cat run through the zoo area passing many people to get to another one of the victims?

The fact is that the zoo has to care for its animals and guarantee the safety of its visitors. Even if those dudes did get on the Tiger's nerves or frightened it, the Tiger should have never been able to get out of its enclosure and onto the visitor area.
-Before this even happened, the men should have been spotted by security and escorted out of the zoo if they were so noticeably intoxicated and belligerent (as the zoo claimed AFTER the incident). They were NOT asked to leave.
-The Tiger should have been in an adequate enclosure that would ensure it would not be able to scape its area... The Tiger could have been set off by smells, sounds, instinct, or a class of noisy 4th graders. ANYTHING could have set off the tiger at any time, it is up to the Zoo to make sure the creature can't get out of its enclosure no matter how Mad or Scared it gets.

In assessing the zoo's responsibility... many people miss the concept of "extraordinary effort for survival." There is the concept of building a cage or enclosure so that an animal cannot escape... but what about an animal that is desperate to survive.
If someone threw several gallons of lit gasoline into the chimpanzee enclosure... many chimps would likely die and a few may grapple their way up shear rock just to escape the horror of the flames. Those survivors would be escaping from an enclosure that would stop any normal animal... but not one motivated by a blind desperation to survive.
I've MANY times been behind scenes of the animal habitats. All are designed to stop animals effectively... but NONE would be 100% against a completely beserk, terrified, or desperate animal.
Think of our prisons and supermax jails. They are all designed to keep wimpy humans from escaping... and even Alcatraz had a string of breakouts.
Bars, bricks, walls, and moats are barriers... not impenetrable obstacles.
I wasn't there in San Francisco... but I've seen up close and personal how human scum will abuse and terrify animals at the zoos. Those two "survivors" need to be charged with murder. They terrified that tiger to the point it took desperate messures to survive and defend itself... nothing less. They are responsible for killing their friend... not the zoo or the tiger.

The guy narrating the news report on the link said that the zoo is going to make the enclosure more secure since it is "12 feet too short" ... Thats just don't sound right.

I cant say I'd agree with that. Our zoo in Atlanta has had for years a completed enclosed tiger habitat. The tigers are enclosed by steel bars on three sides and a several inch thick wall of some kind of superhard clear plastic on the visitor side.

If the Tiger is dead, the Zoo is to blame. Why? Because the Tiger died only because he got out into the public area... Plain and simple. The creature was in an unsuitable enclosure that just could not contain him. He got out and did what Tigers do. The Zoo's own administration admitted the enclosure was not long enough by Zoo standards to contain the Tiger.
PS: That same Tiger had already attacked a Zoo worker in the past.

Look how fucking cramped up and tortured basically on a daily basis these wild animals are. They arnt meant to be caged or domesticated.
A “zoo” is a cruel practice to begin with. They had security there for what? They couldn’t hear/see that the kids were contributing to the torture of the tiger? They should have stopped the kids from fucking with their animal if they actually gave 2 shits about its wellbeing.
Going even further, it wouldn’t be that overly expensive to have tranq guns on hand to the zoo security incase something like this did happen. Instead they just called a cop to fire holes through it. Again, the zoo didn’t demonstrate much care for the wellbeing of the animal, and if the zoo doesn’t care, then why should some drunk 17 year olds?
Its politics right now. Trying to shift as much blame off themselves for fucking up, and onto the kids. Hopefully the kids get a good lawyer.
(by the way, I in now way support the kids fucked up behavior, and I would say their parents should rip them a new one, but the tiger pretty much balanced their karma out). Now to say they all deserve to die and be sued and have their lives ruined further---iz a ideot

Not only do I think the zoo should sue their asses, especially if they try to sue the zoo, I think the kids should be charged. Their reckless behavior put others' lives at risk. They were high, they were drunk, were they underage as well? The law should step in and make an example out of them instead of awarding the families for their criminal and reckless behavior.
