Three Cheers for Mel Gibson

What did I say that was offensive? I'm explaining the jewish perspective on Jesus and anti-semitism.

Also Jesus was jewish. Just a reminder.

I take offense at that.

Since you obviously don't know anything about Jews, let me tell you some things.

We only give a shit about Jesus to the extent that his "followers" fuck with us. That, historically, has been quite a bit.

So if a movie has any hint of anti-semitism, Jews get a little anxious because we're so aware of past and present religious persecution. Even to this day Jews die by the dozens due to suicide bombings in Israel. So excuse our attitude, which is one of, "Just fucking great, another group that sees us as the Enemy."

What makes this movie so bad is that it has the potential to incite anti-semitism in a group that, so far, has largely left us alone: the modern american christian.

Does that make sense?

Very well said Casualbb. I'm not Jewish (not truly Christian either) but I understand where you are coming from.

To me: it's just a movie. I prefer to judge people on their merits and actions (personality), not their choice of religion.

Of course, I also think the Bible is a work of fiction having only minimal historical accuracy, and a movie based on the Bible (this movie) is exactly that: a movie based on fiction. I believe their was a man named Jesus, but he was just a Jewish man born into royalty (ie: not the son of God). I believe he was crucified because he became a great Jewish leader who rallied the people against the Roman way of life. IMHO if Jesus was alive today he would be appalled at the horror and injustice that has been done in his name, all of it in the name of "Religion".

So from my point of view, this movie is exactly entertainment, nothing more. But seeing how many people take religion so seriously and can't see past their own beliefs to think from another man's point of view, I understand why you are upset.

I wish modern people could just open their minds and accept that not everyone believes the same things...

This is one of my must-see films. It is one of the most important historical events ever told on film IMO.

I can't wait to see it. i think it was filmed as close to the truth as possible so we could see how jesus suffered for us. It was made for us to try to identify with what happend to him in his final hours. Crucifixtion(sp) was torture not some painless, goreless thing.

What has gotten in to you? Your hatred for Bush has consumed you. The subject of this movie WILL impact on folks. It will even impact you I'll bet. I dare you to watch it with an open mind/heart.

I'm just calling it like it is.

This movie will do about as much as The Last Temptation of Christ in relative terms.

Will it harden, soften then hearts of some? Of course it will. These people have no mind of there own so they'll sway like reeds in the wind till the next emotive example of distorted history comes along.

I don't see how this movie would incite anit-semitism in modern Christians, since it depicts the Gospel of Christ which any Christian is already quite familiar with already. Besides, it is history.

The very essence of the passion play establishes Christianity as the enemey of Judiasm. Many people don't see this but they're not trying to see it either. They simply accept everything as historicaly accurate and go about thier daily lives not realizing they've been served a healthy dose of anti-semitism by a monotheistic system that promotes and indoctrinates people towards division, seperation and violence.

im going to have to disagree with yoru timeless wisdom here.

Jews have the option of believing that jesus will fulfill the other half of the prophecy of the messiah (coming back again) or believing that he was not the messiah. their choices make jesus their enemy, Jesus himself said he came to fulfill the old law not abolish it.

A persons FAITH and Historical Accuracy are 2 totally seperate things IMO...

That's why it is called FAITH and not History or Scientific fact, right ?

I think most of us may agree in the basic Historical Facts of the Passion.

Jesus was Crucified as a result of the Jewish Religious Leaderships fears that he was causing problems with the Romans allowing the jews to run things without interferrence.

Us Blaming all Jews today for Jesus' death would be like the Jews blaming all of todays Germans for the deaths in WW II..

Yea, some still do, but it's not right..
