but suppose it belonged to russia or china or cuba (lol)... would we shoot it down or would we wait for that country to do so? Our land is threatened, but you can believe that russia would be scared for us to shoot it down for fear that their "secrets" might be revealed when we reach the wreckage.

I keep thinking that the damn thing is prolly all spent and basicly inert, but we want show off the missile defence system and need a excuse. Good idea either way, potentially harmful or not, it'll be interesting to see if we can hit it first try. It pisses China abd Russia off, so it's worth it just to try...

naw.. the russians didn't care, why should we?? and the fuel would be the 1st to burn up..

I agree, but, it would still be better to shoot it down rather than risk the populace to ease political tension.

TXBondsman: The Satellite failed to activate upon launch so it has a full payload of hydrazine fuel. Once it crashed the fumes will poison an area the size of two football fields. What if the fuel tank survived re-entry and landed in, let's say, Irving, TX? It is a quite serious matter.

Actually, for some reason, NASA believes the fuel tank has a high probability of surviving re-entry.

As far as debris, there won't be much if there's a direct hit on any satellite, because the impact is going to take place in the mesosphere. Most debris will burn up.
