The shit hit the fan today...

some of you may have heard me complain that the other attorney here never comes to work or does any work.

Well, the head honchos in Ohio called me today and said that they are going to fire him at the end of this month. Now, everytime I see him I have a hard time acting like nothing is up. I feel sorry for his family that he is getting fired, but enough is enough. He only worked 2 half days in the last two weeks. I don't know why I sort of feel bad for him, but I do. The other half of me is basking in the fact that I'm getting a big fat raise out of it...lol.

I get the same dollar amount raise every year. It's a decent amount and I'm fairly paid but I get less excited about it every year.

Yeah, I know. He has a 7000 square foot home to pay a mortgage on and an 18 month old little girl at home. So, I still feel bad for him. He did it to himself but it is like watching a drug addict go down the tubes -- you still feel a little bad for them.
 
My approach to professional life has been to never be part of the possy. The one time I was, I still feel bad over it.

lol...nope. you would be surprised. I come in on weekends and have even brought devin to work when he was sick. I'm all over this joint.

Maybe you're just underpaid? That's why you're getting a big raise now.

I'm sure he'll land on his feet. Chances are he's seen it coming or already has something lined up and that's why he's had short timer's syndrome in the first place. He hasn't always been a lazy ass or your current company would've fired him long ago.

He's been here 3 years. they opened the kentucky satellite office and only had one file for him to work the whole first year he was here...lol. That is about how many he works now, too...lol. I do all the work here and it is piling up. They told me who the new guy will be. Now, I have to establish the pecking order...lol. I'm not messing around with my career and letting someone get promoted over me...lol...yeah, I'm a bitch.

LOL...ummmmm....no. I only sleep around for fun, not to advance my career. I'm a dumb slut, not an ambitious slut...lol. I haven't slept with anyone at this job. Nor have I ever slept with a superior or inferior employee. =-)

I think he knows it is coming, because the managing partner of the ohio firm sent an email to us all saying he is coming down to take us to lunch...lol. I would know. Hell, I would figure that if I didn't come to work for two weeks except two half days that I would be fired on the spot. He doesn't even call in sick. He just doesn't show up. He came in today at 11 and left at 3...lol. I had to drive to Louisville for a court appearance AND draft all the suits, etc. He did NOTHING, and then said he was going to go pick up his daughter from the sitters and left. That is his typical behavior.

Do you get to be there when he gets canned at lunch? That would be awesome to see over a nice salad.

I usually get really pissed off by any attorney(cept my daddy :good: ) but u seem fine by me.
The rest...FIRE them. Usually shady. Plus, MAJOR smart-asses.

There's nothing wrong with feeling guilt. Yes it's his fault but I completely understand your thinking. Mainly because i've been in that situation. To make matters worse it was a very good friend. We no longer speak.

Evidently, his wife's parents are loaded, because they built it for them and gave them 200 acres of farmland. Actually, I'm not sure if he even has a mortgage on it.
 
I have a question. You're a lawyer right? So if you spend 8 hours at the office, do all those hours need to be charged to certain clients/jobs?

I don't know when it is or isn't in effect, but there are steps that need to be followed to fire someone. Usually it goes something like verbal warning, written warning, etc. Privately owned companies may differ from public ones. Do we have any good lawyers here? (opperative word..."good").

Many lawyers work that way, but our office charges per case a flat rate, because I do real estate transactions. =-)

Kentucky is an "at will" employment state, and this is a private sector job. You can be fired for anything so long as it does not run afoul of ADA or some other law.

In most of my jobs - the more I stood up, stopped taking b.s., didn't care about being fired and spoke up - the more money I made. I know it's so fucked up.
