The police. What are YOUR thoughts?

A comment I saw pissed me off earlier.

Where would we be without the police?

What do you think of them? All pigs? Good citizens?

Cite specific examples to back up whatever you say. I'm tired of unintelligent debates.

I see it like this:

Why would you take a job where your primary function is harassing people?

The "great" pay? - nope
To clean up the streets? - nope
To have a little sliver of power you can exert over others - I'd venture a guess that this is the reason 99% of LE officers applied for the job

Sure, every 21 year old rookie thinks he can make an impact while still being the "cool cop". "Im not gonna give people tickets" he thinks. However, 3 weeks into the job, he's informed he's got a quota to fill, and now he has to give those citizens tickets so the local PD can get some new guns.

If for every time a police officer misused his/her power a bullet passed through the officers skull then America would not have any police officers whatsoever, that's pretty much a fact!
