The five obstructions quite frankly put is simple film in a very complex form. meaning it's message is yet simple but portrayed in its complexity.
It follows Jorgen Leth, a depressed director in Haiti who is looking for inspiration. One of his underscore's, Lars Von Trier sends him on a quest to find himself even though Leth doesn't realize it.
He is to remake his old movie from the sixties "The Perfect Human" with 5 obstructions in his way that Von Trier is in control of.
The Perfect Human is about a normal human and what he doe's. He eats, thinks about love, death, sex, life, and the obstacles in his life. He wonders why pain is so hard and happiness lasts so short sometimes.
As the movie grows on Leth becomes obsessed with his work and slips out of his depression. He makes some wonderful films illustrating the film from different backgrounds and places.
Von Trier makes him connect to human emotions on an intense level. He is to make one of the obstructions in the most horrific place on earth. So he heads to the Red Light District in Bombay but fails the obstruction.
He goes on to do more obstructions, even a cartoon one.
In the end he is to do an obstruction written out by Von Trier. He only reads it. It reflects how Von Trier realized The Perfect human was everybody. Including Leth. Leth never felt what it was truly like to be human until he had these experiences.
It had made him feel more alive.
Hard film to follow, but for those who can its rewarding.
And the overall conclusion of my viewing is that the film was about the simplicity of life yet the complexity of it all at the same time. Humans and the perfect human seem simple, but yet they are complex at the same time, just like life itself.
9.5/10
