The Employee Cost Index is a better metric than CPI for inflation. It measures the cost of employing a worker, the primary cost of business, which means it will be passed on to consumers.
The twelve month data in 2011 showed that costs of employing workers in private industry increased by over 8%.
The March 2012 data from the BLS is interesting.

"Total employer compensation costs for private industry workers averaged $28.78 per hour worked in March 2012. Total employer compensation costs for State and local government workers averaged $41.16 per hour worked in March 2012."
