yes mate, thats pretty much it. you dont grow from doing endless sets of curls. you grow from doing heavy compound movements, just the like the ones you describe.

nahh not even, you lie, you lie!

You do the core lifts only.
I do the core lifts + other lifts that encompass my full routine and we see who bigger

no one's saying that he should only do the core lifts, only that if its size he is after he should use a routine that FOCUSSES on the core lifts

I like to do about 2-3 sets of isolations after my workout. For example, on back day, after my deads, rows, chins, I'll pick a curl exercise and do 2-3 sets.

I do similar to whats already been said, I use Deadlifts as my main exercise on Monday, then I do 3 sets of 1 exercise for biceps and shoulders/traps, Squats & BBrows on Wednesday with 3 sets of 1 exercise for triceps. Bench Press on friday with 5 sets of pull ups to failure.

Don't forget sleep too.

He needs to build a workout routine based on compound lifts with accessory work to hit the small muscles, focused work for form and balancing strength like high rack pulls or heavy holds to help DL ( learned that from Scotsman) cardio to cut bf and tone, eat lots of clean calories to fule his growth, adn sleep to repair his body and let it grow.

sketch does have a good point. he should focus on the core lifts and do a few isolation exercises. but core lifts, diet, and sleep will help him the most

Look into the advanced 5x5 program. It incorporates all the core lifts and the isolation work you want for shit like your shoulders, arms, calves, etc..

Here's my arguement for focusing more on teh core lifts.

Lets say you're a beginner with 15 inch biceps.

The basic function of the bicep is to assist your back in pulling. No matter how many curls you do in an attempt to get 20 inch guns, it's just not going to happen if your back, and the rest of your body can support that kind of size.

Now look at your shoulders.

They basically push stuff up. If your abs, back, hips and legs aren't thick enough and strong enough to stabilize heavier loads overhead, you won't be able to move the kind of weights that will give you cannon ball delts.

So, while the core movements aren't the end-all-be-all of lifting and muscle growth, I feel they're way under utilized by 90% of the population (by the way, I just made up that statistic, but I bet its not too far off).

So I say, start off for a few months with just the core lifts, keep your workouts to under an hour, eat like a horse, do more research along the way, and you'll come along just fine.

Good luck bro!

I think whoever told you that was saying to give those priority, which I agree with. In addition I'd also prioritize dips and pullups. That said there's nothing wrong with doing the curls, the calf raises etc. once you've done what you need to do on the big lifts. It's been mentioned already but you can't underestimate the value of proper nutrition and rest. Think of it as a triangle (lifting, eating and sleeping), without one the other two are useless.
