The brand-new new music thread

majutsu

Well-known member
One of the best threads was the latest music thread started by from zero. A lot of people (myself included) got good ideas from there. Now that is like 7 pages though, it takes forever to load and gets no views. So I wanted to start the new, new music thread.

To get the ball rolling (although this repeats the end of the last thread) I am going to post my five latest purchases:

Shadows Fall The War Within
Underminded Hail unamerican!
It dies today The Caitiff Choir
Converge You Fail Me
Taken Between two unseens

All the music fans and metalheads post up with new music on the horizon. Thanks.

I have a section on my MySpace page where I run through most of the interesting releases coming up for the month with some audio when available.

One thing I forgot to put up there was Bars - Introducing...

It drops next week and features members from Give Up the Ghost, The Hope Conspiracy, and The Suicide File. It's already getting a lot of press in the hardcore community and for good reason.

Audio: http://www.thebarsrock.com/bars_uptomyneck.mp3

I think it's great. The breakdowns are fierce, but they have these new rock-n-roll choruses, like kiss. It's quite weird at first, but grew on me very quickly. It's one of my favorite albums now. I hope you like. If you get it, just make sure to listen to the whole thing in good quality and give it a chance.

Chimaira - The Impossibility of Reason
Dead to Fall - Villainy & Virtue

Fear Factory - Archetype
It Dies Today - The Caitiff Choir

majutsu ... not sure if I'm diggin this It Died Today. Vocals are too punkish for me, I think. Hopefully I can get into it after a couple more listens though ...

yikes, man, I shoulda pointed out that it's all been punk for me lately, except shadows fall. See, my love of slayer and death metal actually grew out of damned/fugazi/stooges/blackflag and bauhaus/joydivision etc. I am older than this stuff (40ish) and loved slayer when they came out (i first heard show no mercy) because of their synthesis of priest/punk/protogoth. The metal movement grew out of punk and blues rock essentially, and I stay with the roots. My first love is all punk. Everything I mention is likely to be punk, and my favorite metal acts are ones that keep this love in some influence, like punk. If nothing else, weird alternative music can always let you do your Adam Sandler-thing and blare it from your car to chicks in a failed attempt to show how underground you are. Plus, when the chick rejects you, you now have 2 psychological defenses, the traditional one ("she's gay") and a new one ("she must not be cool enough to understand me"). :lmao:

Love it flah. A like the fuzzed reverb/noise guitar that is deliberately made to mingle with that off-tune trumpet indistinguishably; I've never heard that kind of shit before . . . (Note to others: It's hard, like everything else on my palette, it's angry, it's punk, it's loud . . . Flah and I mean good within hard music expectations.) Charmer is my favorite too. I put nora their because it's softer/lamb-of-god-approach will appeal to more people on this forum I think.

3 Inches Of Blood - Advance And Vanquish
Bury Your Dead - Cover Your Tracks
Incantation - Decimate Christendom
Isis - Panopticon
Nasum - Shift
Suicide Note - Too Sick To Dance (Forever Fucked)
YOB - The Illusion Of Motion

It's been an expensive day.

How is this? I woke up this morning and turned on the TV and a song of theirs was playing on Music Choice. Sounded pretty good. I forget the name of the song, but it sounded kinda good.

I'm curious too. They're on Roadrunner, right? Kinda makes me feel like they're gonna have a lot of nu metalesque qualities ...

flah, how is the new Isis as compared to Oceanic? I have the latter, but I never really got into it too too much.

3 Inches of Blood is great! It's tongue in cheek power metal. Nothing wrong with a ton of songs about sword battles, pirates, and orcs.

With Isis, if you didn't get into Oceanic you're not going to get into Panopticon. Oceanic was all about the rising swells of the sea, you can hear it in the way the music moves. Panopticon is built like an hour long song. There's hardly any singing and it's mainly structured around long hypnotic parts. None of it is heavy like their old stuff (The Red Sea, Mosquito Control, SGNL>05, Celestial) nor is it quite the experience that Oceanic was.

I personally love it, I put it on last night, sat in bed, and just jammed out to it. Then again, I love anything from that little subgenre (Neurosis, Cult of Luna, Old Man Gloom, etc.).

That actually sounds really interesting. The music was definitely the highlight of Oceanic. I just couldn't grasp the vocals. Just don't think they connected with the music well.

Maybe I'll check out Panopticon if I see it.

Jag Panzer - Casting the Stones
The Haunted - rEVOLVEr
Carnal Forge - Please... Die!
Dio - Master of the Moon

DVD
Carnal Forge - Destroy Live

How's the new The Haunted? I've heard good things and I've heard really bad things...

One Kill Wonder didn't do much for me so I'm kind of on the fence in regards to whether I should grab the new one or not.

Flah,

I'm liking it so far. Needs a few more spins to get a good feel for it. But it's pretty heavy and fast.

Hot Snakes Audit in Progress Makes me wanna go get rockabilly flame-tattoos!!

The Defiance stuff is great too. I heard there's a new split with defiance coming out soon so I'm in the mood.

Isn't a new hopesfall coming out . . . ? Flah? 11/2 I heard. Have you heard it yet?

Yes, it's coming out on the 2nd.

I don't exactly have high hopes for it. I've heard the E-card and the band just isn't the same without Ryan.

Jumbo's Killcrane The Slow Decay (jagged tempo-writhing stoner rock with ass-kicking sludge)

Warriors War is Hell Oh fuck! A dual-guitar hardcore assault.

Slayer - Still Reigning (DVD)

Gee, Flah, the new hopesfall sucks. You're right. It kinda reminds me (especially the video) of an ugly nickelback. These guys have lost it :( Sophmore slump indeed.

It's a senior slump if you count their debut and the EP. I haven't even listened to all of it yet. Oh well.

you fucker. I am going to go look for that later today as it is 3:00 in the morning and I am just getting in from a date.

3 Inches of Blood -- Orcs!!! Orcs!! and more Orcs!! The production on this new one is great, like heyday Iron Maiden.

Since we're doing throwback/retro today, pick up the Chuck Berry Chess Releases to hear it all done right, the first time.

3 Inches of Blood - Advance and Vanquish
Cataract - With Triumph Comes Loss
Caliban - The Opposite from Within

Nothing new of interest. Very low music week (for me anyway). I've been listening to 3 inches of blood over and over (and anyone who doesn't have it and has an open mind to real oldschool metal, definitely needs to get it -- if you are tired of songs about dudes breaking up with some girl, you need the refreshment that pirates, orcs and aliens as subject matter can bring!) Also, enjoying Capharnaum a lot. I'm starting to gather album of the year contenders for a december thread of the same name: album of the year nominations.

Agreed on the 3 Inches of Blood disc. That is some very refreshing stuff there. I've been playing it repetedly as well. Very fun stuff.

I also have been looking back on the past year of purchases. I already know what my disc of the year is. I said it when it came out in January.

How is Shadows Fall........good bad otherwise. I'M not big on singers who scream a lot (exception=Phil Anselmo).

shadows fall is good, 3 inches of blood GREAT, the iced earth releases this year GREAT! Shadows fall, 3 inches, iced earth, iron maiden . . . This is my playlist this week. Powerslave and I are on the same tip this week. I'm on a bulking cycle, and when that sust kicks in, so does the metal. Go figure.

One of the most talented bands in the industry, IMO.

Their fan base is growing a lot lately. They're gonna be huge soon ...

Twelve Tribes - The Rebirth of Tragedy
Remembering Never - Women and Children Die First (which I'm not sure I like. Goddammit to hell.)

From Autumn to Ashes "Too Bad You're Beautiful" last week.

That CD sucks ass, so I took it to the CD exchange store.

Used the trade in towards Iced Earth "The Blessed and the Damned"

Stained class is the best priest album I think, but sin after sin is great too.

Young guns, Iced Earth is great, that's a good album too.

Just a heads up. I turned on the tv this morning and a new Kreator song was playing from the forth coming disc Enemy of God. Sounds killer!!!!

Daysend - Severance
Fates Warning - FWX
Dry Kill Logic - Dead or Dreaming
GnR - Greatest Hits (since the GnR albums I had were all cassettes)

Ahh, gift cards. :)

Mnemic - The Audio Injected Soul
Diecast - Burning Down Your Blue Skies
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Heaven Shall Burn - In Battle There is No Law

and, as a gift:
Metallica - Live Shit: Binge and Purge (3 CD + DVD set)

Monochromatic Stains is track no. 3.

And goddamn is that a great album.

Yeah you're right. I guess my mind just wasn't fuctioning right when I typed that. Too much partying over the holidays I think.

And I agree, it's a damn good album.

I'm slacking. I have not bought a new cd in over 2 months. I think it's on next weekend.

That album would be so much more kick ass if the production was better. Great songwriting but it aches for a Adam D (even though I'm beginning to dislike his recent work) or GodCity makeover.

Homes, don't be saying that. I haven't even listened to it yet. Now you're giving me all these expectations. :worried:

With Honor/The Distance - Split
Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus/Despised Icon - Split

I've been looking for the Majhas/Racebannon split and the new The Mass but I can't find that shit anywhere.

No Warning - Suffer, Survive
Deicide - Scars of the Crucifix
Arch Enemy - Dead Eyes See no Future (EP)
Opeth - Morningrise

Great Opeth album, if you dig their type of music!

Umm... you... bought... Deicide? Have they learned how to not suck? LOL

I'm part of the Glen Benton Sucks organization, Milwaukee chapter. Actually, I liked their first album.

Destruction - Metal Discharge
Angra - Temple of Shadows
Susperia - Unlimited
Invocation of Nehek - S/T
God Dethroned - The Lair of the White Worm

How is this bor? Only one of two Opeth albums I don't have yet.

I think I still need have to listen to it. I got it and put it on the iPOD and I don't recall if a song as been played yet. I usually keep it on shuffle.

Opeth - Orchid
Dying Fetus - Stop at Nothing

Anyone hear any of Kari Rueslatten's stuff after she left Third and the Mortal? I've always wanted to get one of her albums, but I don't think there's any metal stores around my new school.

Her demo album is pretty good.

I wish I could have brought a power amp and my pair of Alesis M-1's to school with me.

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Worlds Apart
Cursed - Two
Dark Tranquility - Character
Darkthrone - Sardonic Wrath
Jesu - Jesu
OM - Variations on a Theme
Scar Symmetry - Symmetric in Design
The Mass - City of Dis

I never had the original debut so I can't compare the 2, but the sound quality on this isn't bad at all. It's not the sound quality of the later 2 albums, but it's definitely acceptable.

Killswitch Engage - Self Titled Remastered (definitely sounds a lot better than the original)
Testament - Practice What You Preach

Mnemic is good. That band has a lot of potential I think. Have you heard their debut?

Diecast is awesome. I love that CD.

No I haven't. The only thing I've heard by Mnemic are the samples on their website.

Unlike the darktranq stuff etc

Also got leo kottke's latest and a remaster of his first "6 and 12 string". Nothing like big spliffin' with the kottkinator.

Cannae - Horror

I was in 6 different music stores and not one had Heaven Shall Burn -Antigone or Callenish Circle - Forbidden Empathy. Talk about irritating. Ok I'll quit bitching now.

How's the Cannae? I've only heard one song off it. Liked it a lot, but I can never find the CD anywhere.

I listened to it once through and its pretty decent. There are some solid tracks, but no real standouts in the first listen, other than Anna's Love, which I already had and is the reason I bought the album.
