Speaking of mid-point ... there's a concept in Industrial Psychology known as "the halo effect".

The halo effect refers to a cognitive bias whereby the perception of a particular trait is influenced by the perception of the former traits in a sequence of interpretations.
Loosely translated it means "what have you done for me lately?"
As a career slacker I've mastered this concept.
So in the context of annual job appraisals, I slack the majority of the year, then a few months before appraisal time I kick butt. The boss is more likely to remember the most recent efforts when he writes the appraisal, and I come out smelling like a rose
