Society has gotten better at not judging by tattoos, I've been a recruiter in 2 dif companies and tattoos had no play in the recruitment process unless they were offensive or they were in the face (no face/neck tats or face jewelry were allowed there), that being said, there are some careers in which it's just not a good idea to get tattoos that are highly visible, specially healthcare and constant customer interaction positions.
Like Woody said with the gang vs artistic tats, the type of tat makes a difference too, personally I have 2 tattoos, both in places I can cover up fine (pelvis and shoulder blade) I'd never get arm tats or even leg tats because whether I like it or not I will find myself in situations in which people will judge me for it.
