Surfing Teen Loses Arm in Shark Attack

ZKaudio said:
i been pretty close surfing at the ranch... a group of sealions got attacked like 30 feet away from me... I've never had an adrenaline surge like that before...

Really? Please describe it more throughly - Time, season, etc... It is not wise to swim near Seals and such. You actually live an area that is known as the Red Triangle. Now that I think of it...YOU ARE VERY LUCKY MY FRIEND.

Really, could you tell me a little more? I am a shark fanatic. I don't want to be rude or insensitive, but I am highly curious. Was it a white shark, what was he/she doing at the time.? Is there a link to an article I could read?

There are Tiger sharks in the US. Mainly in the warmer waters of the Atlantic....Say North Carolina and down. Tiger sharks are pure beasts...I guarantee it was a Tiger that took this young gal's arm. And Tiger sharks do not kill more than White sharks. The species that is believed to have killed the most humans is the Bull shark…But it is really tough to gauge since the third world keeps shady statistics on such matters.

it was in 1990, around the Monique Price Mossel Bay, just the wrong place at the wrong time, just got dragged down under the water and the rest is history , it was a great white while surfing

Damn...was it a guy/gal. Did they find the body? What size did they estimate the shark to be? Sorry to hear about that.

That sucks. I surf mostly on the east coast so I do not worry about whites, but Bull sharks are bad. I swear they just attack whatever they see. Tiger sharks are bottom feeders so they usually hit swimmers, but they get a surfer now and then. I have seen Tigers up to about 12 feet long in the outer banks of North Carolina, talk about getting out of the water quick. If it was HI, I bet it was a tiger, most shark attacks in HI are tigers, but usually in murky water, not on a clear day. I surf, but I like sharks, real interesting creatures. They are to be respected for sure. A useless fact I heard recently was that male bull sharks have the highest level of Test of any animal every tested. Could explain their aggressive behavior.

it was a male and the shark only ate part of the body, so the rest of it floated to the top, and identifed, it was my father's
co-worker's son

sharks are only dangerous when you dont see it coming, like a drunk taking a cheap shot at you. If you see it, you can punch the shit out of it, it's just another fish.

I take it you've been face to face with a shark before?

I heard that tiger sharks have the worst bite because of the way their teeth go through flesh. Bull sharks can produce more force, and white sharks are even stronger than bulls but they don’t have the teeth that tigers do.

I am slightly below the bottom portion of the red triangle. I surf close to every other day though and have never so much as seen a shark aside from that one experience. I am educated enough to know I should get the fuck away from packs of seals...

It was most likely a tiger shark which bit off her arm. Tigers are common in Hawaiian waters, and how the shark was able to completely take off the arm in one bite also indicates that it was a tiger.
