Supplement scams over the years

OK, I'm an old timer. Who else remembers all of this crap foisted on people by the supplement industry?

Late 80's Early 90's
Dibencozide
Boron
Wild Yam
7-Keto-Diosgenin
Orchic
Sarsaparilla
Yohimbe (before it was used as a fat burner, they claimed it naturally contained 10% methyl testosterone).
Hot Stuff
Muira Puama
Cybergenics

Mid 90's
HMB
CLA
Vanadyl Sulfate (mmm toxic waste)

Last couple of years
Methoxy-7
Ipriflavone
Myostatin Inhibitors

I'm sure I've missed a few.

Don't forget about 'Phase 1'... for those who weren't ready for the massive gains from the actual Cybergenics kit!

OKG... tried the raw powder, instead of caps. Like drinking powdered gasoline.

That whole line of 'Russian' sups that was advertised in the mags, like Mumi, etc.

7-Keto-Diosgenin... no way. 7-Keto is amazing, but DHEA-diosgenin (yams) is ol'scool junk.

CLA is good for fat loss, based on recent studies.

What about these old worthless supps...

GKG
boron
Dong Chong
MCT- medium chain triglycerides
Desiccated liver
Wheat germ

Some of those things work, just depends on what they claimed.

Usefull, maybe not to a advertised degree but in general:
Desiccated liver - high iron supply
CLA - minor use fat loss
MCT - good for blood lipids
Chromium - great mineral that enhances glut-4 (slin receptor) sensitivity

Scams

Ecdysterone - bug juice
Methoxy - stupidity in a can
liquid creatine - or 'creatinine" waste product

Almost any pro-hormone configuration that included a name with two steroids crossed together. ie .. parabol, dianasterone ...

chromium picolinate is my favourite sup.Been taking 800mg 4 a yr now.Totally abolishes cravings 4 chocolate,ice cream etc.yehhhh!!!

Anyone remember ICOPRO?

Russian Bear was a scam.

universal's Sterol Complex is still on shelves what a scam!

Oral glutimine will turn out to be a scam too.

Detour Bars:
Carbs: label: 21 actual 30+
Fat: label: 9 actual 17
Protein label: 32 actual 9

That's from the 1st lot Nature's Best had tested. They have another one with results yet to come back.

i can't believe that The Beast is still around!!! It's in every major publication so they must still sell a shitload of it. I think we all got scammed in the past by shit products but I guess we live and learn. I still laugh at the cybergenics and the icopro systems, remember you'd have to take like thirty huge pills a day. I'd drink a gallon of water just to try to get them down!

Ah, I remember Vanadyl Sulphate.

"SportPharma's Vanadyl PH is the most effective supplement I have ever used." -Dave Fisher

Can't believe I fell for that shit.

Have to disagree with you Rich on Hot Stuff. It might of had a few ingedients in it that was worthless, But when it came to having the energy to lift more pondage and speed through a workout it worked. Then the government cracked down on the company and it had to remove the working ingredients (don't remember if that was ephedra or not.).

The original steel bars....who would have thought that a bar that tasted so good had the nutritional equivalent of a Snickers, ha.

Speaking of Cybergenics....

Those fuckers at L&S research not only suckered me with Cybergenics, but then again with Cybergenics for "Hard Gainers"!!!

Of course - I know ain't none of ya gonna believe this, BUT, when I used to work at GNC, I tried this product by L&S aka Cybergenics - it was called Super Infiniti 3000 weight gainer. I actually did gain a LOT of weight in a couple months using that formula - then again, mixing with water gave me 2,400 EXTRA calories a day, so I guess I can see why I gained almost 25 pounds :D

Tried almost every other thing that came along. Cell Tech worked great for me, as did Nortestin, but that shit is overpriced.

Gonna try some 1-ad and 4-ad with my homemade "cell-tech" brew! The jusry is still out on that one.

Oh yeah, and by the way, some lame-ass company called "Iron Works" had a kit similar to Cybergenics, and of course, I gave it a shot. ONE shot of Test would do more that 2 months of that crap!

Later

The funny thing about cybergenics is, if you just followed the workout and through the rest of the shit in the trash, you would end up with good results.

I used to take russian bear AND those universal sterol tabs. I think half my daily calories came from those pills! Made me think I was macho at least!

Someone mentioned St. John's wort. This stuff actually works. Pharm idustry keeps testing it for severe depression, which it is never said to work for. This way they can say it doesn't work.

I don't remember the brand, was an off brand, but bought some caps that were supposed to have nor-dione and andro-diol in them, were tested to not have a drop of the diol. Notta!

one that's been around for a long time and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it is all this alleged 'powdered protein.' I've been using that garbage for 20 years with zero results.

Yet still I walk in to GNC and what do I see filling the shelves? Powdered protein. It's gotta be the biggest scam in body building ever, yet I never read anything about it. Sheesh.

I swear I've snorted more canisters of that up my nose than I can shake a stick at and STILL can't bench my body weight.

L-Glutamine: effective only in IV form and at very high dosage (100-150G ED). All the tests I've seen were performed on burned/post-surgery patients. For the immune system it's ok...

What is even worse peeps come to boards like bodybuilding.com to get some honest opinions on a product and their posts get deleted with no esplanaition. Or they get banned.

It is sad because we are all constantly being fucked with.

I also think it is funny how in magazines there will be some article on how a supplement is bogus but have a 10 page ad claiming the miracleous effects of no2.

Now lets get back to a serious discussion on prohormone usuage shall we. :D

Good point. Supplimenting with any non-essential amino acid is a waste. Studies have pretty consistently shown that oral administration of non-essential amino acids show no increase in protien synthesis, and little if any change in blood serum levels of any anabolic hormone. L-glutamine is poorly absorbed (less than 10% of it makes it into the bloodstream), and your body can readily make it on its own from other amino acids and/or glucose. Even peptided bonded glutamine is over rated, since a lbs of steak has 10-12 grams in it, thus its quite easy to get alot of it simply from one's diet.

Anyway, this a good thread, so it needs a bump.
