Supplement Recommendations?

nycgirl

New member
I've noticed that different members are taking various supplements (Please excuse the newbie - I'm still learning. And I'm probably driving my bf crazy w/ the questions). I'm trying to do this solely through diet and excercise.

I currently take a multi-vitamin and reintroduced 1000 mg of vitamin C into my regimen. Is there anything else? I've seen glutamine mentioned in the logs. What else is out there?

Thanks!

EFAs (flax , fish oils)

any thermogenics? e.g. thermorexin or leverex?

I also think a good multi-mineral is helpful.

L-glutamine helps w/ recovery after training.

Personally I think the best idea is to keep your supps to a minimum. A good multi-vit & multi-mineral should cover all your needs. The flax or fish oils (e.g. Udo's Choice) are a good source of fat. If you are looking for a thermogenic, there are some good options at AF Store, but you don't *need* to go that route if you don't want to. Good for a kick in the pants to get goign in the morning.

I take additional stuff like selenium & vit E as recommended by my chiropractor for further protection from spinal disk degeneration, but I've got a specific case that I'm trying take a preventative maintenance approach.

Re: Thermogenics - I have a very scary family medical history. The last thing I need is for something to speed up my heart.

I include a TBS of flax seeds in my oatmeal. Should I include the oil in my diet?

IMO, Diet and exercise are the two most important factors ... the multi is also a good addition.

There are some great threads that discuss personal experiences with different supps. Sorry I don't have the time to search and post up the ones I thought were most helpful.

If you put your daily meals / foods you eat into a calorie counter such as fitday.com you will get a breakdown of what you are consuming in terms of total calories, fats, carbs & proteins. A balanced diet has fats in it. The question is how much good quality fat are you getting in your diet? Flax is a good source of that. I'd say take a look at your macronutrient breakdown in something like fitday and see if you are indeed getting enough fat. Other good sources are nuts, steak, fish, etc. If you are coming up short, then you can add in flax oil say, in a salad -- I use it as the oil part of some home-made vinaigrettes I make or just w/ vinegar.

As far as thermos, no you don't need to take thermos, but its a common supp that people take for that kick. Just trying to cover the bases.

Another one I thought of after I posted was r-ALA. You can read more about it at the AF STore (www.anabolicfitness.net/store).

Consult a doctor if you are worried and you want to add supps to your plan... Good luck to ya!

Im afraid to take anything other than protein shakes and multi vitamins, lol.
My body seems to respond well w/ just that alone.
I suggest getting a multivitamin for sure.

I'd probably have to agree w/ that -supposedly you need to do a frontload on it first and then settle into a normal maintenance amount. Its really hard to say what makes a significant diff & what doesn't. For me I notice when I don't get enough fats and MSM has been miraculous as far as managing my joints / tendonitis.
