I have a quick question Care free sugarless gum zero sugar but 2 grams of sugar alcohols which equal 2 2 grams of carbs it says per slice now will your body convert them to glucose? Im on CKD and was wondering before I had a peice

"Polyols are slowly and incompletely absorbed from the small intestine into the blood. Absorbed polyols are converted to energy by processes that require little or no insulin. Some of the polyol that is not absorbed into the blood is broken down into fatty acids in the large intestine. "

I would say it is OK

The problem w/ sugar alcahols is that they, well, act like alcahol. Meaning, they float in the blood stream, althought not spiking blood sugar, they can be stored in the liver as liver glycogen and prevent glucagon from being released.

I would say 3 pieces a day, spread out is fine, totalling 6 carbs.
