Strong Benchers = Good Posture or Back definition?

Elementality

New member
I've always noticed that in the gym whenever I see someone benching a lot Relative to their own body weight, they seem to have really good back definition and posture.

Shoulder blades align well with the rest of their body. Posture is good...

Anyway, something I have considently seen throughout lifting.

Bench should be classed as a full body excercise. Posture is essential when pressing, if you do it right (ie legs planted, back arched) your whole body including back should be worked

However chances are if someone lifts heavy ass on the bench, they probably lift heavy on everything including back...

I do know that a propper workout with correct motion and weight movement do couse you to have better posture. This was always in my case. Im sort of a huncher as well, i have had some seriouse blows to my spine from car wrecks and shit. So i am extra carefull now with stretching and movement while working out. But the more i work out the less my back hurts, and the more i raise my head to the sky. I do think the chest helps with shoulder posture by the way!

i have bad posture, not a great bench....but strong back with good back definition. one thing very very common with bad benchers is arm length, i have stretch-man steve long arms.

My shoulders definately are slouched forward unless I am thinking about it and make sure to correct my posture. My bench is pretty good for my size and age but my back is definately my weak point.

You think Deadlifting helps with slouching, why?

Because when you reach the upright position and lock ur hips forward and shoulders back in a deadlift, you are affectively in a perfect upright position, posture wise.

Try doin the crab/ Bridging, and also standing against a wall with heels, glutes, shoulders and back of the head against a wall for 10 minutes or so.

Your entire erector chain is worked with the DL.

Yes and building these muscles will kind of make you stand up straight. Slouching is just being weak and lazy, when you build these muscles you will find that if you slouch it will start hurting because that is not the natural way to stand.

I've never been one to hunch my shoulders foward anyway and I dont understand why people do that.

I used to slouch - posture makes a massive difference to the way you see the worls and the way the world see's you

I have read that guy's who concentrate on bench/chest work without giving the back it's time tend to slouch because tight pec's & anterior delts pull the shoulders forward. Without built back & posterior delt muscles to compensate this can cause slouching.

I've seen guys like that and that explanation makes sense. I've just always stood up straight, not trying to look like billy bad ass or anything just thats the way I was taught and now its second nature

+1 You can have a dude with great posture and a flabby weak body compared to a guy who has a relatively good body and bad posture. the guy with the good posture looks better in clothes every time.

Also I find I interact with people differently with good posture, a lot more confidence.

Im a fan of yoga (my mum teaches it an used to practice on me!) - its awesome for posture an elongating muscles.
