Strained Left Patella Tendon

Hello trainers,

About a week and a half ago, I strained my left patella tendon. When I squat down then come back up, there is a noticeable popping noise. I perform a couple sets of light leg extensions tonight and I felt soreness right below the left knee cap.

So far, this hasn't affect training, but its a nuisance!!

I think I acquired this injury when I was performing sumo style deadlifts.

My question is, have any of you guys and gals experienced this?

Do you think it would be wise not to train the area? I am scheduled for push presses in a couple of days.

I am convinced that squats and push presses had nothing to do with this.

Well today I notice that the soreness is located on the bottom left corner of the knee cap (left knee).

I wonder if I am battling burisitis? This has happened before during the wrestling years. . a very tender condition.

it could be I suggest taking a littl time off, especially motions where you lock out, ie leg ext push presses and start to relax and ice it now and then to relieve any inflamation. Also the weakness in you knee could be an overly strong quad and a relatively weake tibialis muscle

Any chance you can see a good sports doc about it? Someone familiar with these types of ailments?

I have a good friend who is a chiropractor. I may stop by and have him check me out. I think all of this is a minor strain. . .I can still squat down with ease, but I am concerned about the popping noise.

I'm telling you, see an Active Release Therapist (usually they are also a chiropractor as well)...my knees were fixed in 5 sessions.

Also, I believe speed squats might well be the cause. I've heard of speed work being hell on many peoples' joints.

see the chiro...........

I have pops all over the place loudin. My knees pop my shoulders pop etc. Its the air and tiny bits of fluid that fill the joints. Fairly normal for an avid athlete.

something to think about.

In 1994, I tore my MCL during a wrestling match in the same knee (didn't require surgery - was out for 6 weeks). I have had bursitis in the right knee.

It may sound like I have bad knees, but strength training and building muscle made the knees incredibly strong. Heavy squatting is no longer a problem.

All of you offer excellent advice and I will take each comment into consideration. Thanks for your help!

You can tear and ACL and still squat fine, there isn't much load placed on the ACL while squatting from what I know, PCL is a differnet story :)

Believe me. . I know what torn ligaments feel like. . . I had the experience in 1994.

Its a minor strain. . .a little sore, but seems to be cooperating nicely today.

Try whats called a infrapatellar band. This is simply a band that wraps around the knee and puts pressure on the patella tendon to avoid this type of pain. We use these from time to time on our patients that are runners. They have given us pretty good feedback so far. I only hope that you dont have a slight tear in your tendon from the heavy squats. From what you say though, you would probably know what that would feel like. You may even want to try a non steroidal anti-inflammatory like vioxx. If you are still having problems in a few days, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Excellent information Lat!!!

You deserve some green for your information and support. Seems like the knee is doing pretty good right now. There is a little bit of soreness, but nothing excruciating.

The green is always appreciated bro. Feel free to drop me a line anytime you need some Orthopaedic help.

Same with me. My knees are very loud when squatting, and my shoulders make lots of sounds. Nothing to worry about, much like Hammer said.
