Squatting with a belt

I don't use one any more. I'd rather avoid injury and get increased development than load up extra weight for the belt to hold for me. Just think if you allowed your core to lag and f*cked your back up just because you'd been wearing a belt.

The body's own belt, your abdominal girdle, should be trained and worked to keep it apace with the rest of the muscles involved in a squat. Develop functional strength and your body will take care of itself provided you exercise reasonable prudence.

Obviously, if I were to try to go beyond my max then I'd need to wear a belt/wraps/suit etc. If you do choose to use gear during training then keep track of your separate maxes: eg raw max, max with belt, max with suit, max with suit and belt, max with wraps, max with belt + wraps etc, etc.

If you're nursing an injury, such as a hernia, then the rules change a bit and you do what you must to keep training and to help yourself get as far back to normal as possible.

That is what I've been doing. I'll hit a near max raw squat, and then add a few more pounds and put on my belt and go for one more set. AFTER I've went hard without the belt...and not every week.
