Squat Shooes

Nearly killed myself squatting some days ago... I was going for 4 reps with about 390lbs (175kg), ass below knees without a spotter (I know that was foolish). My first two reps felt ok, but at the bottom of my third rep I totally lost balance because of my left shoe (regular jogging shoes) that failed to support me. Guess it must have looked like a combination of squats and lunges :)

Anyway I have decided to invest in some good shoes for squatting, and I was wondering what kind of shoes I should buy?

Until I get the new shoes I was thinking about just squatting without shoes, like I do deadlifts. Do you think that is a good idea?

The Old Days

Is this that damn Jake? You been breaking bottles all over the road lately? Heard yer dad got bit on the butt by a gator. Combat boots. Only way to go.

Thanks for your advice, I'll se if I can afford some of those bad ass Adidas shoes. If not, I guess combat/work boots will do the trick :D

Sorry about posting this thread twice, don't know how it happened

Haven't got hold on any decent shoes yet, so I decided to squat barefooted today...

It really kicked ass! Started out with 160kgs and worked my way up to 3 reps with 180 kgs. I couldn't imagine that it would feel so different! No problems at all keeping my balance right. :fro:

Heavywear, glad to read that you like work boots to squat in when you are in a pinch. I only have 30 minutes to work out with during my lunch break and I have been getting results from my work boots.

Man...Chuck Taylor's All Stars are $35. Or better yet....squat barefoot if you must. Forget boots!!!!

Have done mine barefoot 2 weeks in a row...love it. The dogs run when I take my shoes off..but not everyone can learn to love the smell :)

best shoes

the shoes you choose should be chosen based on your squat stance. If you squat wide like the guys from Westside then Chuck Ts are best but if you squat conventional then a firm bottom with a wedge heel is best like a work boot, squat shoe, or olympic style shoe (my choice). A shoe that doesn't roll or have a spongy bottom is best for your knees and to keep you from falling forward. Check out www.usaweightlifting.org for their adidas weightlifting shoes.
