Sports Medicine?

I posted this in Chat...
But this board may be more appropriate.

I have been having problems with my right leg burning.
It goes all the way down and bothers my knee and the
bottom of my foot.

I know it may be a sciatica nerve.
I'm just wondering what I can do for it..

I've been taking anti inflammatory's.. But I don't want to
take them everyday..
And I've taken off from working out.. And when I come back it
starts all over again.

Any suggestions?

Pamela,

I had a problem with my sciatic nerve 2 years ago. It seems that it went right through a muscle under my glute. That muscle would get inflammed and pinch the sciatic.

I went to a physical therapist who suggested anti inflammatories, as well as stretching.

The stretch that worked the best for me was to lie on my back, pull my knee toward my chest, then putting one hand on my knee and the other on my ankle to slowly pull my leg up and across my body at about a 45 degree angle.

I did that before I worked out and participated in sports and it eventually went away

does the pain travel almost in a line? like its traveling the path of the nerve? or is it more difuse and spread out?

is this pain at the front of the leg (navel/illiac area downwards)or to the rear (from you ass downwards?)

the pain in at the back radiating down the legs in a line is what you usually get with sciatica if memory serves me right....

does the pain ever happen while walking or doing other exercise....and is it cramping in quality (whats its character, u said burning)? anything make it better or worse....does it radiate anywhere and when dd itstart (after any unual thing)?

I've had this burning sensation for several years.
I believe it started when I taught aerobics..
But over the years it has progressed.

It bothers me mostly
when I do DL's or Good Mornings.. It puts a lot of stress on the hamstring. It goes down the back of the leg, and sometimes I feel it in the knee and all the way to the bottom of my foot.

Also it bothers me when I walk.. Cause I've overstressed the hamstring.
I've been taking anti-inflammatorys & stretching the leg up on a swiss ball, and that has helped it somewhat.
But I don't want to depend on the anti inflammatorys.

Burning is the best way I can explain it. Cause it doesn't feel like a pulled muscle.

I know I should go see a Dr. but I don't want to be on any drugs, just to relieve the pain.

I thought there may be something more I can do..

Thanks everyone for your responses..

if it is sciatica or a nerve related pain, there isnt a huge amount you casn do that you haven;t already tried, sounds like a trip to a doc is in order, depending on how loaded your hospital is they might do an MRI on you like thai said

im not sure if sciatica is a burning type pain, thouhg i think that shows it may be nerve related. either way it looks like it something the doc should be appraised of

just an edit to say:

when you say walking....is it something that happens after roughly the same distance each time while walking, and is relieved by rest?

and also have you felt any other symptoms with the pain? dizzyness, headache, lethargy etc?
