Something terrible happened while doing deadlifts..

got big?

High End Bro
Platinum
Doing deadlifts on Friday, I'm doing my typical weight, and was gonna finish off with a set of 405. I usually get it for about 3. This time I was able to get two more reps, then on the 6th rep, i pulled the weight up, and i felt a pop on the left lower side of my back... so i lowered the weight, continued the rest of my workout being very careful and using light weights, and since then the pain has just gotten worse and worse.. so tomorrow i'm going to the doctors... bottom line.. i'm thinking muscle tear
I'm also 3/4 into a cycle of sust/fina which i think I'm gonna stop...

now my concerns are how long will this take to heal, and can i still continue to workout through it, at least chest, shoulders, upper back, legs (no squats or presses though)?

I don't understand how this happened, I guess the weight was just too heavy? I wasn't struggling with it, and I've been going heavy with deadlifts for over a year. I was going slow, i wasn't doing any jerking motions, never in a million years did I expect it to happen. I know where I stand with deadlifts, what weights i can do, and what my limits are and I was not pushing it at all...

This is true.

Muscles can develop faster than ligaments, esp on gear. Deadlifts have always been my strongest lift. Ive JUST STARTED including them in my routine like 10 weeks ago, and am up to 420 for reps (3-4). On my first cycle, Im gonna try to deadlift 600 for reps by the end. (sus/dbol) anyone think I can do it???

NFG

You may also hear a "pop" when you herniate/rupture a disc. Better hope this wasn't the case because this injury will fuck you up for the rest of your life (I just had back surgery). Your doctor will probably prescribe an mri so you won't know for a week or so. I hope that you don't have to go through what I have gone through. An injury like this can be VERY depressing. I hope for your sake this is not the case my thoughts and prayers are with you--kmc

I am a firm believer in deadlifts and i do them frequently but man all that pressure on your back cannot be good. Have you ever tried doing lighter weight with more reps. Bro I just dont know if all that weight is such a smart thing to do. I have a bad back so my deadlifts have to be reps around 15 with light weight. Actually i get a better workout from doing this.

same thing happend to me about 3 months ago...couldn't lift for 2 weeks...don't fuck with deads anymore.

We're not Dr.s but...

I can only guess, but I'd say a possible herniated or ruptured disc. Go to a chiropractor (a good one) and see what he says. Tell him you WANT an mri. He should have no prob with that. Tell him you work out and it's a big part of your life, that you wanna get back to the gym asap. Go to your primary doc and see about gettin some anti-inflamatories and muscle relaxers (usually perscribed together, at least for herniations). How many weeks exactlyalong are you on your cycle? Stick with it and see what the dr's say. You might only be out a few days...maybe...see what happens. How bad do you hurt in general? If you wind up finding out you'll be out a t least a few weeks, then abort the cycle is what I'd say. Why waste the gear? The important thing is to get yourself checked out thoroughly. You could see an orthopedic dr., but Id wait on that, you might not need to. I went to one, when I herniated my disc and he told me I could come back and see him for therapy if I really wanted, but that I would more than likely be fine without his help, and I was. He may tell you to learn proper movemnets for daily life and tell you to seriously stretch your muscles. Anyway, I know how you feel not knowing, it sucks, but go get checked out and find out what's up for sure. I hope it's nothing major and I wish you a speedy recovery.

I feel your pain bro.Don't ask how I did it, but I fucked up my lower back doing leg press about two months ago.It still gives me problems when I do squats, deads ,or leg press.Good luck and I hope that your ok

I had the exact same thing happen to me bro, (except mine was on the right) but more severe....it is still not completely healed almost a year and a half later....be very, very careful with it and get on it right away.

Bro hope everything turns out alright...shit, i can't deadlift shit.

I just started doing them 3 weeks ago and I only did 265 for 5 the other day. Not to mention i am 6'3" which makes it even harder.

This post just scared me Ive been doing sets with 405 and im not on a cycle yet I know ill be going heavy as hell on my cycle .But I think im going to drop the weight back down and go for more reps (it does not seem worth getting hurt over )

so this pop i "felt" in my back.. this consistent with a muscle tear or what?

Every now and then when my partner goes up on dead lifts, I stand behind him and pop a rubber band on his back. Scares the shit out of him. It took him about 3 times to figure out that I was doing it and it wasn't something popping in his back. :FRlol:

My work out partner is 6'4 and he has only been dead lifting for the first time in his life for 2 months now and he is doing reps with 455 and has never done a cycle "yet" .So it just depends on the person and genetics .

Damn, maybe that's why no one wants to work out with me. That and the fact that I've been out of deodarant for 3 weeks. LOL!

I hope you will be ok bro. Dead lifts are not an exercise you want to go for "one more rep" on. When you feel you have done your max amounts of reps, you need to stop. Is there any bruising on your back? If not, then you probably didn't tear a muscle. I don't think you slipped a disk either, because if you had you would be in too much agony to even type this message! I suspect you just pulled a muscle. If this is the case you need to rest this muscle until it fully heals. Good luck bro.

i did the same thing deadlifting.....my high school coach wanted me to be in some mag for lifting so my bench and squat were up to par so i tried for a 615 dead and i got 2 and had sloppy form on the third and bam..... fucked one of my dics up... sux i still can't dead or squat heavy.... i went to massage therapy and chiropracter.. still messed up... so be real careful with your back don't jump back into things ,make sure it gets the proper attentionor you could have a lot of problems down the road like me!

This is not average. Your friend definitely is very strong with the deadlift. 455 is a great lift..especially for reps. But the fact is, if your friend was 5'9" he would be able to deadlift a lot more weight. Simple Physics. That was the point I was trying to make.

How much does your friend weigh?

I've hurt myself twice doing deadlifts, but I still love them. Nothing seems to make my back grow better. First was about two years ago, got an inguinal hernia. I am not sure that is what caused it, but it seems that it was sore and tender after a hard deadlift workout. Second happened about one month ago. Had belt on a little too tight, and something on my lower side just under the belt lip ripped. I still don't know if it is a herniated muscle or organ, or just a muscle tear. It doesn't hurt too bad, but still nagging. I went to a doctor and he said it does not feel like a hernia, probably a muscle. I haven't lifted for about three weeks due to surgery on other thing immediately thereafter.
Deadlifting is great, but I think I am going to heed the advice of you other guys and go for at least 10 reps with lighter weight and never squeek that last one out. I like doing 8, 6, 4, 3 but I may be pushing my luck. Thanks for all of your advice. Good luck at the doc's tomorrow. I wish you the best, and know how you feel right now.
