Something I'll never do again.....

Sup all;

Just wanted to share my shitty experience with everyone and perhaps warn others like me,( tall w/ long torso), about the dangers of squating and dl'ing.

About 4 weeks ago I went for a MRI as my D.O. thought I might have a disc problem after my first ever manipulation did nothing to relieve the nagging back and siatic discomfort. 2 Hrs after I left the hospital the neurosurgon from another hospital in town called me and said he wanted to see me tonight as i may be in real danger of loosing the use of my legs as well as bowel and bladder control; basicly in a wheel chair wearing a diaper. Sure enough I had 3 crushed discs and a 4th herniated about the size of a 1/2 dollar at the L-5/S-1.

Now, 4 weeks post surgery, I am back in the gym doing light weights and walking. I will be back but only as a bench presser, no more 3 lift events.

Here's a pic of me locking out 525, my biggest and last big squat. Everyone...take care of your back...you never know. I had no pain at all, just a "sore back".

Sorry to hear of your troubles...hopefully everything works out okay and your back gets better soon. Do you need to have surgery? If so, what kind of surgery? My mother had 3 herniated discs in her back. Two fused themselves and the other the did a discectomy to help relieve a pinched nerve. She's had alot of problems and is still in pain. She was hurt and suffered with her injury for 12 years before deciding to go ahead with surgery though. The muscles in her back were very weak and I think that has alot ot do with it. Good luck and let me know how things go - I always look for new information to pass along to my mother and her doctors - trying to help

Thanks Tang', I edited the post to add apicture and also say that it is now 4wks post surgery and I feel great.

Tx again Bro'

damn bro, sorry to hear that...lately when I good morning heavy, I feel like something is gonna snap in my back. i should probably be a little more carefull...

u can't see that pic...i'm a non-plat :( happy to hear surgery went well...what type of surgery was it? What part of the world are u in? Where we are there is a huge doc shortage and getting a referral takes forever! Ma is going to see a doc in Ottawa for a second opinion and see if she needs another surgery.

damn bro- that is a crazy story... I had a messed up disc in HS and it felt like somone smashed me in the spine with a sledgehammer... I don't know how you walked around like that..

Discs are a lot more fragile and unforgiving that vertabrae, i had my T5 shattered in pieces and was nearly paralyzed but have made a full recovery with no limits. I,ve met a lot of people that have had injuries much less serious but disc related and had their lives dramaticly changed. It's too bad there is not an easy way to detect disc problems.

Wow, that's some story. From the outside looking in to me it sounds like one with a happy ending. You got to know the feeling of squating a weight few people ever really do outside dreamland.
You found out you had a problem BEFORE it paralyzed you, that my man was a close call.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. the good news is that I went to the gym the other night for the first time since surgery. The Doc said 6 weeks but I couldn't wait any longer and I only used 30lb d-bells. 4 sets of 15 reps with a 30 sec. break; arms delts and upper back along with a 30 minute walk on the treadmill. After 4 weeks of watching my arms wither it felt great to get a solid pump again!!

For those of you still shaking your heads, I did have a partner hand me the weights and pull the cables to me so I wouldn't have to bend over, just incase.

Again, thanks to everyone. Taker care and be safe.

B.
