some peeps just don't grow??

yesterday was my first day back in the gym after an extended layoff because of a shoulder injury.

i work out at the same gym at about the same time (depending on when i fall outta bed!).

i was gratified to see that some of the regulars from before i got injured were still there, pumpin' and sweatin' away.

then i noticed......most of these peeps were still the same size as before i laid off!!!

WTF???

Most people are the same size forever and ever because they use the same shitty routine that doesn't work with the same shitty form that doesn't work with the same shitty eating habbits that don't work day after day, week after week, year after year.

Most people come to the gym on monday to max on bench with their asses a foot off the bench, and pump up their chest and bis, they come in on tues to do lat pulldowns with the entire stack, not knowing how much it is, while they swing their bodies as if having a seizure and still only manage to move the bar in a 2 inch range of motion, they then do some type of row tht looks like a pelvic gyration, then they move on to every type of bicep curl inaginable with the worst form one can dream of.....Wed is a day off from all the "intense" training....then they come in on thurs to do 1/16th of a rep milirary presses on the smith machine, swinging side raises with more weight than they have any business touching, 1/40,000th of a rep shrugs with 8 plates a side, and some partial ROM skull crushers with 100% assistance from a spotter. They spend thurs night - sun afternoon pouring alcohol down their throats, eat about 1,000 calories a day and do this for years.

Thats why the average gym member, despite being considered "built" or "buff" by the average person who doesn't workout never seems to grow or progress despite being a member of a gym for 5 plus years....lol.....I noticed this phenomenon myself.

Enough with the elitist training mentality. Although there are some who fit that description there are plenty of capable, motivated, and intelligent members at my gym and we often learn a lot from each other and help newer members out.

Furthermore, not everyone at your gym may have the same goals as you do. Maybe they dont have the resources to grow because of money, time, stress, work ect. Or maybe they like the size they are and are comfortable just staying healthy and relieving stress. Not everyone goes to the gym to look like Ronnie or bench 500.

That said, most of the problems you higlighted concern ego-driven know-it-alls who think they are hot shit. Check your ego at the door and let them be fools, they aren't hurting anyone but themselves.

I think you missed the point. Most of the guys at the gym are there to either get stronger or bigger or both. Once you get away from college gyms the drive to look like a male model goes away. If you aren't there to get bigger and stronger then you probably aren't lifting enough to do anything for your muscles anyway and should probably just give up. Using the same workout and same weights time after time will amount to jack shit in terms of any kind of progress. So why don't you try not to sound like an egoless undriven know it all.

At my gym there is one guy who for the last two years hasn't gone up at all in weights, changed his appearance, or even added any reps. Still he struts around like king shit. Oh well at least I get amusment from laughing at him.

Hmmm..I was just thinking about this yesterday....what is the point of even going to the gym if you are not making any progress?

I was someone who made absolutely 0 progress in my first 6 months of training.....why you ask? Not eating enough, doing a horrible routine and basically knowing nothing about how to train correctly...

Luckily enough for me...I found the internet and saw people using words like "deadlift" and "squat" and I tried these exercises and by golly, I grew....

It's funny how people say "not everyone at the gym is there to get big"....if you train with weights....THEIR ONLY PURPOSE is to tear a muscle(Ok maybe I am wrong in strengthening the R\C ligament) and then subsequently it will become bigger after proper eating and rest..

A guy at the gym started talking to me yesterday for basically no reason at all...and I very rarely do this but I enquired about his routine...he said it isn't really working and after telling me his diet it was suprisingly good? Just needs to eat more.and start training with free weights..I am setting this guy in the right direction...and I wish someone did this for me....

However much we can deny it...no one goes to the gym to make zero progress in whatever goal they are aiming for...sadly people read routines out of Flex and think that these 20 set bicep routines are going to make them huge...and come back month after month, year after year....I wouldn't really care about this that much...but it is always these people giving me "advice" or saying I am doing this exercise "wrong" and then pumping out 30 sets for chest..

Actually I saw a good friend of mine enter the pits of overtraining through his own stubborness and inability to see that he was simply doing FAR TOO MUCH work with weights and that just because some says it is beneficial doesn't make it true..

Sorry for the long winded post

LMAO!

Doesnt this occur with about 90% of the people in the gym.

Yeah, I think you completely missed the point. The point is that no matter who you are or what your goals are, you are at the gym to get things accomplished and make progress and improve yourself by doing something constructive. It doesn't matter if you are an elite athlete, an overweight woman looking to drop a few dress sizes, an elderly man recovering from a heart attack, or a guy who wants to gain some muscle, you SHOULD be inching closer to your goals workout after workout and you SHOULD NOT be at square one after 5 years of going to the gym. If you want to chat with your friends and release stress you should go and fucking play raquet ball then walk around the treadmills and try to find a date for the weekend and stop wasting the space and time of people who have an agenda and are at the gym to accomplish goals.

Furthermore, any male who is lifting weights in a gym, or makes an attempt to "lift weights" is doing so to gain muscle, strength, or both. That what weight training is for.

I love these guys. They always yield great entertainment when we need a laugh in between some heavy sets.

I am seriously considering writing a book on all of the jackasses you see at gyms. I want to give the characters names, Like Joe Suitcase for the guy Scotsman described in the post I quoted. I am still thinking of names for the ever-present group of 5 college kids who fancy themselves as some sort of metrosexual male models.

I prefer to call these guys the "Beach Boys."
All they do is come in and train their beach muscles and leave.

Hhahaah..the Beach Boys...same guys who look at their "abs" between sets...

Couple weeks ago one of these metrosexuals did this after a grueling set with 135 on flat...so of course I had to follow suite and show off my glorious one pack.....

At college we called them the "frat fags" As they were all little frat boys with the same weight room uniform. Wife beater(not tight), Hawiian shorts, gloves(unless you are a hand model don use these), and of course visor(cause they are too cool for hats.)

I kept typing rebuttals to this but they're really not necessary...

GREAT ONE Scotsman,
I tend to call the "Frat pussies."

I actually had a guy train with me while at Purdue that was one. He always bitched and moaned so i made the workout that much harder so he would have something to bitch about. He was pretty much sore the entire semester. Then it was hell/bash day for him anytime he wore anything with the frat name on it.

True, just most of the guys I described above were frat boys. They all belonged to one of two frats that just sat around and partied.

Actually their are some great guys in fraternities, however, it is the few bad apples who ruin for everyone else.

nah, they're pretty much all a bunch of pansies. You gotta think there's something a little homoerotic about the whole frat thing anyway.

I go to UofA, believe me this school is a greek as it gets. I talk to some frat guys, they're not that bad but they have that jackass attitude. A lot of them juice too, they still arent very big.

As far as not getting any bigger...I think 90% if it has to do with diet. 10% comes from training or not going up in weights etc but it is all related.

Yeah, when I was in school I never had a problem with any of them, but they pretty much were all panty waists (save a few and I know there are exceptions to every rule).

You couldn't be more right about the whole juicing and not being big thing. One of them would usually go on the net and score a bunch a under-dosed, undersanitized gear, from Mexico of course, and then a few of them would take an obscene (even by pro BB standards) dose and go from 165 to 172lbs and their bench would go from 225x1 to 225x6 (with poor form of course) then they would really start carrying the luggage around campus, then in 8 weeks they'd be a buck 65 again.

Seriously, though, it would be more fair to say that most of those guys like that in the gym are from fraternities, but most people in fraternities are not like those guys.

Ok guys, I will try to be the voice of reason.

If those people are trying to workout with heavier weight than they can with proper form, they are dicks.
If those people want to grow and are not growing, then they are dicks for not finding a site like this on the internet to help them.

Some people do not want a body builders physique!!! They want to be in shape and use weights to do so but are not looking to grow.
They do 10-15 reps for three easy sets, barely reaching failure and they are happy with this. In my opinion they should still change their routine every few months, maybe they do and still do not grow. As I said, maybe they don't want to grow.

Some people work out to strengthen their body as they have a bad back or an injury. The gym is great for them but they have to go slow and easy. SIZE is not their goal.

I myself would like to reach a certain size and strength and then just maintain it.
Anybody who cannot understand why I or someone else would want this, has a serious problem understanding other people in general.
Really, from reading some of the above posts it sounds to me like many people here think that anyone who's main goal in life is not be a body builder must be a stupid pansy girlie. I agree that lots of people I see in my gym are pretty ridiculous but some of those ridiculous people are the huge body builders walking around as if they are the best human sample in the vicinity - just because they are huge...

You can't knock anyone for consistently going to the gym because over 80% of the population are too lazy to go even once (I pulled that number out of my ass, but it seems about right). I think what the other guys on this thread were knocking are the one's who are there to grow or get stronger, but are too ignorant to learn proper methods of training. Instead they do chest, bis, and abs everytime they are in the gym, think they are the shit for pressing 135, and then complain that they cannot grow.

As a gym owner, I watch people come in and go out all day long, the same people, and hopefully new people day in and and day out, week after week, month after month, year after year. And let me say that I am 100% convinced that the number one reason that people don't grow is what I call "UNDER LIFTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" It actually gets to the point where I'll get pissed off watching a guy doing a set of db rows for 8 reps with 20lbs. when I can tell by the expression on his face that he could easily do it with 60 pounds. Since I'm the owner I can do these things, so I'll go over to the guy and ask him what the hell he's doing and have him get the 60 pound db and do the set of 8, which of course he can. But what happens, the next week when he's doing back again?????? He goes and gets the stupid 20 lb. bell again and sticks to it!!!!!!!!! I don't even bother with these guys anymore, cause ya can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped. I don't leave the gym to anyone else, cause basically I don't trust anyone else with my "people" so I know each and every person who works out there, and after 5 years of watching both men and women work out, the ONLY one's (and unfortunalty it's only a small handfull) who have many any serious gains are the one's who consistantly push and challenge themselves with progressively heavyer weights, or by using "intensity" techniques. I agree with those of you who mentioned diet as a factor also, but the bottom line is that if you don't stimulate the muscle to grow in the gym, not even the best of diets is gonna make a damm difference. O.M.G.
