Of course negative things happen in war. No one disputes that--not even President Bush. Read my post again if you need to. I never made any generalizations about Amercians who question the administration. There is, undeniably, a radical left movement in this country that believes that America is the problem, that America is an imperialist aggressor, that America is a global criminal. Those are the people with whom I take issue, and with whom you should also.
A coherent point about why the war was a good thing: The war was not initiated as "a good thing". It was prosecuted as a necessary thing. Just in case everybody has forgotten, the U.N. security council and nearly the entire rest of the world, and nearly all of the Democrats in Congress, including Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, believed Iraq possessed WMD. The war went forward because of widespread military intelligence from all over the world, and because there were 14 resolutions in place compelling Iraq to comply with disarmament and disclosure. THAT was always the central point in the argument for using force.
It turns out, after all, that the war WAS a good thing. You and I and the rest of the armchair geniuses on this board are not in a position to decide that issue; the people in Iraq are, and they have, overwhelmingly. There is no question that they are better off today. Certainly, innocent people have been killed and maimed. When you do what had to be done, there is no way around that. But the man in the street in Iraq will tell you that the price paid during the war is far preferable to the price they paid daily under Saddam Hussein's dictatorship. Didn't you see anything about the election last weekend? It was absolutely flawed, but it was a milestone in that country's history, and no less legitimate. President Bush helped make it happen and, for that, he is to be congratulated.
