You can expand image file sizes about 50% by using interpolation before quality becomes an issue if the original was good.......very generally speaking.

Lets say you have a very high quality 8 MB image and want to construct a 36 x 48 for example? Then you need algorythyms or something to maintain image quality.

Extensis makes a pxl SmartScale program that promises 1600% image file increase without sacrificing quality. I bought it thinking I have little to lose. In THEORY.....one could make billboard images if they are viewed from considerable distance.


What say you image folks?

All I know is that photoshop gives me the best quality when I downsize the image.

What was the qulaity of the original? If you are talking about 800x600 web images then there is only so much you can do. Try both Gaussian Blur and Unsharp Mask to maintain a good image while blowing it up through interpolation.

Just making 2.X MB images into web content from my digital. Dreamweaver produces a nice little .js script that produces thumbnails with good results as well. It utilizes fireworks.
