So I had the trainer at the Y measure my BF%...

I believe my BF% to be around 14-15% right now. So I had the guy at the Y measure it the other day and he used the multiple site test: tricep, Quad, love handle and belly.

He noticed I had been working out and stated that it may not be very accurate since it wasn't first thing in the morning and I had just ate a huge breakfast just before going to the gym.

I was under the impression that the belly measurement was taken at the iliac crest, just above the hipbone.

I unfortunately hold all my fat in my lower belly and this guy grabs up every single ounce of fat from the fattest part of my belly he could possibly get (just beside my belly button) and took a measurement.

The result came out to be 19.6%!!! That totally took all the wind out of my sails and I cut my ab workout short.

So maybe not a great time to have it done but am I correct in that probably wasn't the most accurate belly fat measurement he took?

It doesn't make much difference as to what time of the day you take caliper readings. I would be more concerned with a flawed calculation or an inappropriate method of taking bodyfat.

With my Bodybuilders I use the Parillo which is a 8 Point test, with my general athletes I'd use a 7 point Jackson Pollock. I'm not familiar with a 4 point test... Post a pic and I'll tell you where you're around...

Can you really eyeball it rather well? Cause I've been itching to get an approximating of my bf but I won't really have access to do it for about another month so a general estimation would rock if that is possible.

You are probably somewhere in between what you think you are and what you tested at. I'd be guessing in the 16-17% range... The good thing is, it doesn't take long to go from 17 to 12%. 1 month of clean eating + strict cardio will get you there...

I can't eyeball anyone perfectly, but I can compare you visually to people I test everyday. If you had done a method that included more survey points you would have tested lower. (Bicep, Tri's, calves all give off lower readings in bodybuilders) The 4 point method would work better on general public without the muscle mass...

Ingram is def spot on of course... Most people are higher than they like to think they are... However, if you just worked out, if anything it would make your reading LOWER than it would be otherwise (muscles are pumped and make the skin tighter, therefore lower reading)

I always do mine first thing in the morning, pre cardio, pre food, and usually I do it after I had a rest day the day before... that way I can be as loose and flabby as possible :)

Ingram,

Thanks for the encouragement, I failed to mention I am about 10 days in of a cycle (my first!)of 100mg of test prop EOD and 1/2mg Adex EOD, So I am eating more than I ever have and still losing fat even with no cardio!

I also weighed after I posted and I have gained around 8-10 lbs in while on cycle too. So I weigh 245lbs now.

So I may hit you up when my cycle is over about a diet if you don't mind.

Thanks

I wish my gym would do a accurate BF% test. They had hold some device that said I was at 11%. Thats fine, it made me feel good that I had accomplished something in the last 4 months. I went from about 170 to 155 in that 4 months span but I don't think its accurate. I have abs showing a little but I still have trouble in my lower gut. I also drink beer every week which is my downfall. How accurate is the handheld?

i tested at 17% 6 weeks ago (about 5 weeks into test and primo), i'm 5'9" and was 209 at that time

it was with one of those handheld things

i looked at the trainer like she had 4 heads and told her flat out it was WRONG and suggested calipers and that she pinch every damn part of me

she was like, oh this machine is very accurate and similar to calipers

this was me that very same day (weird pose and i'm pushing my lats back - bear with me):
