Sleeping or relaxing...

Ok, so ive always read that muscles will rebuild when you are sleeping....so get plenty of it and eat well. However, I just read a couple articles that stated "relaxing" as in watching tv or whatever will suffice. Is this BS or true?

I ask because my daily morning routine is wake up, take all my pills, half a bagel with peanut butter, some sun tea, 2 scoops of whey w/ glutamine, and off to the gym I go. I work second shift, so cooking burgers on the grill is all I do from 9am until 3. I usually catch a 30min nap between time. Is this helping at all?

Rest is good, but actual sleep is nec. to allow optimal results. How you get your sleep is perhaps less important. One summer I gained 30lbs from 165-195, sleeping 6-7 hours in the evening and then getting 1-2 hours sleep in the afternoon after my workout.

Are you saying that you work from 09:00 until 03:00 the next day? If so then you're not going to want to keep that up for too long - but I guess you already know that! ; )

I am quoting directly out of the Sept. 08 issue of Ironman Magazine, very interesting arcticle called "Sleep to Grow. " A study of young men found that sleeping during either the day of night led to more testosterone release, when young men are deprived of sleep, their test. levels plummet rapidly." "Shift workers who experiance disturbed sleep patterns all show lower-than-normal testosterone." "Most studies show that a lack of sufficient sleep is closely linked to increased bodyfat. Several mechanisms explain why. Hormones that control appetite get unbalanced when you don't get enough sleep......"
Just the highlights, very interesting arcticle with plenty of research references to back it up, I'd see if you could still find a copy and skim through it.

Rest in the form of sleep is very important bro. Night sleep is a lot better and more important that day sleep. The biological clock and the way the body is made, I insist that night sleep is more effective than day sleep. An hour of sleep a day is "like" 30minutes of sleep at night.

Rest may be important. But how do you rest? You sit around on the couch and watch tv? I think rest has to be "sleeping"

I'm tired of these of a blanket statements.

my actual day starts off like:

7am wake
8-930 Gym
930-230 relax and watch tv, do small things around the house...take an occasional 30 min nap
230-11pm work
1145-7 sleep

My main question was answered pretty much..that actual "sleep" is better than relaxation. Im suppose im concerned about not resting at all until 13 hours after I actually get done lifting. Didnt know if that made a difference is all.
