SLEEP PARALYSIS: Anyone else experience this?

goliath.jr said:
You should go have a sleep study. This is a major symtom of Narcolepsy.
I have already done the sleep study thing. It really is a mystery. Although they did find that I wake up 28 times per hour without knowing it. My sleeping patterns have always sucked.

This happens to me alot too. I think it may also have to do with anxiety issues. Whenever I'm stressed is when it will sometimes happen. Glad I'm not the only one.

I have that happen occasionally... and when i was taking melatonin it increased it 10 fold... i went to a sleep doctor and got basically the same answer... it won't kill you but we really dunno enough about it to provide a substantial treatment.

I get the same exact thing, except i'm not sleeping and I don't get paralyzed. It usually happens while i'm pooping.

You bastard!!I just spit my coffee out all over my monitor!LOL!!!

On a serious note, that is a very disturbing malady stonecold,I believe I have heard that also referred to as 'Old Hag syndrome'.I think the name originated hundreds of years ago when one of the first individuals to experience this was coming out of a dream state and thought he saw the apparition of an old woman sitting on his chest and holding him down. From what I have read,it feels like something is sitting on top of your chest preventing you from taking a normal breath and moving.
Personally,it sounds like a mild synapsis let down that sort of puts you in a semi-coma for a few minutes..

I have had it happen dreams so real took a few hrs after woke to realize it was not real...I think from deep R.E.M. sleep after long peroids of w/little or no sleep..

any meds?

I find it odd nobody wants to address your problem.

If I were you I would remove the thumb out of your ass before pushing.

This is scary...You guys just answered alot of questions for me. I have been having this sleep thing for years. I always can't move and if I'm lying on my stomach it feels like I'm paralyzed and getting pulled downward into the bed. Ive had this happen and Ive tried to push myself up or move but couldn't. Most of the time after mins. of struggling to move I'll finally be able to move, but then I get scared and afraid to go back to bed. I'd usually put my lights on and watch tv for awhile..

Great post bro..it cleared some stuff up for me. I've always thought my house was haunted and some strange shit was coming for me while I slept..I kid you not....

sorry for the rambling in this post but I just got excited that others get this strange occurance.

yeah i was just reading that... except i don't have narcolepsy! unless you can have narcolepsy and never exhibit any characteristics of it. i mean... i like sleep and all but i never just fall asleep involuntarily at random moments.

you're right about the study though... i should go do one. i am also prone to bouts of sleep apnea. waking up suddenly and feeling like you're suffocating because you haven't been breathing for the last 30 seconds is almost as scary as sleep paralysis.

boy... i hope i never have bouts of these things at the same time... theoretically i could stop breathing in my sleep, be fully aware of the fact that i'm asphyxiating, and be unable to do anything about it thanks to sleep paralysis....

....that's it... i'm never going to sleep again.

So that's what that is. Hell yes, I have sleep apnea. I often awake in a panic state as if I need air real bad. It seems as if I was about to die had I not awakened.

:D Ok I'll admit it now that you have..................I thought my house was haunted or I was possesed.

Yeah I have had that happen to me several times, not recently. Extremely scary!!! It felt like my bed was moving back and forth and sideways and I could not wake up for anything. I was unable to move any part of my body. One time I found myself just a few inches from the ceiling, obviously I was in some sort of dream state, boy was that weird. It occurred more when I was napping rather than just in the middle of night. -valerie
