SLEEP PARALYSIS: Anyone else experience this?

i can honestly say that this is one of the most horrifying feelings in the world. from what i understand, what happens is that your mind wakes up enough to become concious and aware of your surroundings, but not enough actually take control of your body. so your body is still basically asleep. when this happens i feel like the guy in the metallica song "one".

this has happened to me a handful of times in my life. the first time, i thought i was either dying or dead. i could "see" my surroundings and the fact that my sister was calling my name from the doorway, but i was powerless to respond. i tried to get my body to twitch so maybe she would come wake me up...nothing. i tried to make noise...nothing. after struggling to no avail for some time, i just gave in and eventually sank back down into a normal sleep. the three or four times it happened after that, i knew what was happening so i just tried to relax and go back into a deeper sleep.

the reason i know these aren't just all part of a crazy dream is because several times, after finally waking up, i have been able to tell people about things that they were doing while i was in this state of sleep paralysis. for instance... after the first time it happened, i didn't see my sister until the next day. i told her that i knew she came over yesterday when i was napping and tried to wake me up. i even told her what outfit she was wearing. she confirmed that i was correct, and was obviously confused as hell because to her, i appeared to be sleeping soundly.... and on my stomach facing away from her!!!

anyway, i had my worst experience with this last night. i was sleeping next to my girlfriend (who knows i've had this happen in the past), and having some sort of strange dream. next thing i know, i'm in this sleep paralysis state and desperately trying to wake up because something from my dream had me worried about my girlfriend. somehow, this time i was able to make slight jerking movements and even mumble a little. my girlfriend was scared to death because she kept shaking me and i wouldn't wake up. the whole time she was doing this, i was perfectly aware of what was happening, but could not wake myself to respond to her. finally after more shaking i came fully awake.

anyway... this sucks. if anyone knows anything about this i'd be very interested. thanks.

One of the scariest things I have ever experienced. I have talked to many Dr.'s, psychiatrists, etc, and have done tons of research and never got a solid answer as to why this happens, only that it is nothing to worry about. It used to happen to me all the time when I was doing a lot of E. Thankfully it hasn't happened in along time. (knock on wood) It is really a horrible feeling.

easy for them to say! they aren't the ones spending horrifying minutes trapped in some altered sleep-purgatory dimension!!!

anyway... glad i'm not the only one. i think i've linked it to stress, but still, that doesn't really explain it.

Yes this has happened to me and I was just a kid when it first happened. I think I was like 10 years old and I was sleeping on the couch and I woke up and I was looking around the dark room but I couldn't move at all. I was so f*cking scared. I was trying so hard to move my arm that when the paralysis wore off I ended up throwing my arm into the wall. *ouch* I've asked other people about this and they look at me like I'm nuts. Good to know I'm not the only one.

You should go have a sleep study. This is a major symtom of Narcolepsy.

yeah i was just reading that... except i don't have narcolepsy! unless you can have narcolepsy and never exhibit any characteristics of it. i mean... i like sleep and all but i never just fall asleep involuntarily at random moments.

you're right about the study though... i should go do one. i am also prone to bouts of sleep apnea. waking up suddenly and feeling like you're suffocating because you haven't been breathing for the last 30 seconds is almost as scary as sleep paralysis.

boy... i hope i never have bouts of these things at the same time... theoretically i could stop breathing in my sleep, be fully aware of the fact that i'm asphyxiating, and be unable to do anything about it thanks to sleep paralysis....

....that's it... i'm never going to sleep again.

that has happened to me on occasion.. maybe once or twice a year.. its weird.. what happens is like your mind is awake, but your body is asleep.. and everything happens in slow motion.. you think its like a VERY life like dream. Its freaky..

Yes, this occasionally happens to me. Never really thought much about it. It's like I want to get up but can't and then I just go back to sleep. Strange feeling, huh.

I have already done the sleep study thing. It really is a mystery. Although they did find that I wake up 28 times per hour without knowing it. My sleeping patterns have always sucked.

This happens to me alot too. I think it may also have to do with anxiety issues. Whenever I'm stressed is when it will sometimes happen. Glad I'm not the only one.

I have that happen occasionally... and when i was taking melatonin it increased it 10 fold... i went to a sleep doctor and got basically the same answer... it won't kill you but we really dunno enough about it to provide a substantial treatment.

I get the same exact thing, except i'm not sleeping and I don't get paralyzed. It usually happens while i'm pooping.

You bastard!!I just spit my coffee out all over my monitor!LOL!!!

On a serious note, that is a very disturbing malady stonecold,I believe I have heard that also referred to as 'Old Hag syndrome'.I think the name originated hundreds of years ago when one of the first individuals to experience this was coming out of a dream state and thought he saw the apparition of an old woman sitting on his chest and holding him down. From what I have read,it feels like something is sitting on top of your chest preventing you from taking a normal breath and moving.
Personally,it sounds like a mild synapsis let down that sort of puts you in a semi-coma for a few minutes..

I have had it happen dreams so real took a few hrs after woke to realize it was not real...I think from deep R.E.M. sleep after long peroids of w/little or no sleep..

any meds?

I find it odd nobody wants to address your problem.

If I were you I would remove the thumb out of your ass before pushing.

This is scary...You guys just answered alot of questions for me. I have been having this sleep thing for years. I always can't move and if I'm lying on my stomach it feels like I'm paralyzed and getting pulled downward into the bed. Ive had this happen and Ive tried to push myself up or move but couldn't. Most of the time after mins. of struggling to move I'll finally be able to move, but then I get scared and afraid to go back to bed. I'd usually put my lights on and watch tv for awhile..

Great post bro..it cleared some stuff up for me. I've always thought my house was haunted and some strange shit was coming for me while I slept..I kid you not....

sorry for the rambling in this post but I just got excited that others get this strange occurance.

So that's what that is. Hell yes, I have sleep apnea. I often awake in a panic state as if I need air real bad. It seems as if I was about to die had I not awakened.

:D Ok I'll admit it now that you have..................I thought my house was haunted or I was possesed.

Yeah I have had that happen to me several times, not recently. Extremely scary!!! It felt like my bed was moving back and forth and sideways and I could not wake up for anything. I was unable to move any part of my body. One time I found myself just a few inches from the ceiling, obviously I was in some sort of dream state, boy was that weird. It occurred more when I was napping rather than just in the middle of night. -valerie

I have a similar, but slightly different problem. Sometimes when I wake up, my cock is paralyzed. Its like all stiff and I can't move it, its just standing straight up, and , well, paralyzed....

But thank god, after a few minutes it goes away...whew...

thats nuts i totally didnt think anyone had this too. I think it started a long time ago when i was like 10 or something, and i was lying on my parents' bed in the middle of the afternoon. I kinda remember trying to mentally cut off my body from my brain, so when i tried to move, i couldn;t, and it actually worked, scared the shit out of me. Its happened a ton of times since then, but this time completely involuntarily. Its fucking scary because if theres someone in the same room or close by, all you want is for them to come over and help, but you cant say anything. I fucking hate it. I always try really really hard to move my arms or anything, sometimes it eventually works, other times i dont know what to do.

That's what so great about these boards. It's nice to find out that people are just as weird and screwed up as you are.

Yes, I have this affliction also. The worst part is not being able to open your eyes. After about thirty seconds of effort I am finally able to open my eyes and maybe raise my head and look around and see that I am not in danger.
There is a hormone that is responsible for sleep paralysis. It prevents you from physically acting out your dreams as they occur. Perhaps we have a little too much and sleepwalkers too little.

wow there are some really interesting similarities among those that suffer from this. so many of you are describing your experiences and i can feel myself getting anxious because its exactly how i feel when it happens. i agree about the worst part being when you know someone is right there... because in those cases i seem to try especially hard to get their attention. the times its happened when i know i'm alone, i just think "oh, this again..." and let myself go back to sleep. when on my stomach i also have that feeling of sinking really deep down into the bed. that was the feeling during my first experience that made me feel like i was dying. i literally thought i was sinking into death. i spent what seemed to be an eternity fighting it to stay up, thinking if i let myself slip down it would be the end of me.

the one thing i have not experienced with this is the feeling of a malevolent presence in the room or of someone/something holding me down. its either just me alone in my paralysis or another actual person in the room with me, which i'm always able to confirm upon waking.

bite me... yes, apnea can be horrifying as well. i've gotten used to it though. most of the time i somehow become aware that i'm about to stop breathing and can catch myself. sometimes, though, i can't. this has scared my poor girlfriend too. she says the sound of my rythmic breathing puts her to sleep and its something she likes, so she notices almost immediately when i stop breathing, even if she's also asleep. she'll actually catch it before i wake up suffocating. i'll wake up to her shaking me and telling me to breathe. god bless the girl.

This used to happen to me often. It has not for a few years.

aalox - you are right, the worst part is not being able to open your eyes.

I get a feeling like I am on a roller coster right before I gain control of myself again.

When it happened to me, it would happen 3 or 4 times that night untill I found that a damp cool towel on my neck will prevent it from occuring repetedly.

Now I don't wanna go to sleep :(

I've also heard that it's an anti sleepwalking mechanism. Also when you fall asleep and your body jerks involuntary that also has to do with your sleepwalking mechanisms kicking in. Well that's what I've been told anyways.

That's interesting. My body jerks like an epileptic(sp) in my sleep. I nearly punched a hole in the wall one time.

It's really weird, i got that this week.

I was in bed sleeping and i woke and see my sister on my computer and the lights on, and then my mom walks in and gives my sister a Christmas card which was from my uncle to me, and she was to place it on my desk. I remember seeing all of this and being aware of all my surroundings, but i feel like it's a dream. I wake up the next morning and see the christmas card on my desk. Then i ask my sister if she was on my computer and she said she was, but didn't know how i knew. I walk up to my mom and told her to thank my uncle, and she wondered how i knew it was from him with the card not being open. Freaky stuff i swear. :(

Yeah I've busted my hand a time or two. Hell my husband almost knocked me out one night.

Yes this happens to me also frrom time to time. It's uncomfortable.

Well, lucid dreaming makes up for it.

Oh, and flying must be the best dream feeling other than sex.

Yes. I use to fly all the time in my dreams. I can also jump all the way to the rafters during a basketball game. I can jump off of high mountains and land safely on the ground. I hope in my next life that I can actually do these things. It would be fun for a while.
