Skater's Legs...

I've been watching the Olympics lately and Ive noticed those 130lb speed skaters have legs that most 200lb plus bodybuilders would die for.. Big thick tear drops over the knees, round hammies...
I seriously doubt they squat for maxes or even double or triples just ONCE per week..
What do you guys think they do? Medium weight, EOD leg work outs, or do you think they hit them everyday?? I mean those quads are very impressive....

Now way, they definitely weight train! These are best athletes in the world, they use every training scheme out there.

Max training is different than what they do but I'm confident in saying every single one can squat minimum 400lbs.

im sure they could.. but i just dont see how a 400 pound squat would be beneficial to them.. they are so small framed.. i would love to know what they do.. I could see them doing tons of front squats, lunges, agility exercises.. just sick quads on little little ass dudes..

you dont get to be an olympic athlete without having olympic genetics. It's like saying look how tall bballers are, imagine if I played ball every day could I be as tall as them :) What they do to train is for performance.. size is a result of their sick genes and doping.

...and alot of sprinting i guess

those dudes skate for hours everyday, and no doubt they have been doin it for most of their lives. skating is a hell of a workout on the legs so i bet if you did wot they do for years you would probably look similar. they would do weight training but nothing special.

Form follows function. They skate hard, all day long.

I'll agree with this. Just like the gymnasts, they all have good genetics. Not to say they don't train hard as anyone else, but just because elite athletes may look better depsite their performane oriented training, doesn't mean that anyone can look like them.

Are you guys saying that Olympic Athletes dont' use preformance enhancing drugs? Neither do Football players, or cyclists, or baseball players..... Come on guys, these athletes are using steroids like crazy.... They just know all the secrets of how to NOT get caught.... Yeah, they skate for hours a day, and the steroids help the quads get huge..... If you don't think they are using preformance drugs, that suprises me..... I know that 2 Austrian athletes had their apt's raided this Olympic's, cause they were suspected of doping..... Who knows how they got caught, but they are the unlucky ones....

Their big quads come from the position that they put their body into for hours on end, every day at practice. The skaters positioning is almost the same as a static hold on a squat. If any one of you stayed in that position for hours a day for years, you would have legs like them also.

thats what i figured.. i was just wondering how they are soo small up top but have massive legs.. i consider myself to have above average genetics... can squat ATF with over 3 plates for reps but dont have the quality of muscle that most of them do.. i was just thinking maybe of attacking my legs in a different way

I mean, that is def true, but it's more then that.... I still think the high majority of them are juicing, esp in countries where it's legal..... Temptation to do the drugs must be very high, and most competitive people will do it... That's my opinion anyway....

some may bash me for saying this, but you can get quite big and ripped without using anything but your own bodyweight, no gym is needed. I used to work with this british guy in the UK (go figure) that only ever did situps, pushups, pull ups and ran up hills and I kid you not, he was a somewhat smaller version of Needsize but not by much (that isn't meant as a slam to NS or to say he doesn't do hardwork, just saying the guy was big without a gym is all). He did use some gear but mostly lower does test and eq and some var. Just goes to show you if you do 100 push ups, 50 pullups, and 200 situps a day over the years, you will get big and strong. The gear helps too. :)

They skate...

I figured it was only a matter of time before someone would offer a great comment like that...
My point is that I think I am going back to doing my 5 sets of 20 reps on the squats and see how it goes.. No other movement taxes my body as much as ATF squats do.. I know.. I know.. my form must be bad.. Its not.. My body just doesnt feel "right" while doing heavy triples with free weight squats...
Anyways thanks to those who offered some insight..

Not to take anything away from the speedskaters .. " but " when you see them on tv in there skin tight wind resistant uniforms they do indeed appear to have bigger legs then the upper body ( but you have nothing to compare them to ) ... fact is if you seen some of these men or woman in person they are not that big at all ...

Friend of mine is a speed skater and in pictures his legs look amazing ... beside me in the gym he looks average at best and i don't have the biggest thighs in town believe me .. lol

Skateing is in the transverse plain of motion meaning the adductors and abductors get a pile of work as well as the outer vastis muscle more then the rectus femoris ( which is the largest thigh muscle ) so this makes the leg look wide from the front but without working the hamstring group the leg lacks depth or thickness it just has a big bulge on the side .....

I watched an interview last night with the canadian womans relay team and on the ice they look very musclular .. off the ice they look like a group of 14 year old teeny boppers ...

Throw on some tight tight spandex pants then flex your legs infront of a mirror .. i'll bet they look bigger on tv where there is nothing to compare them to then they do in person .

Go out on an ice rink and skate 100 laps in the speed skating position and then report back and tell me they don't hurt as much as a squat workout. Those people skate so much per day in the squat position it is impossible for their legs not to grow. I'm willing to bet they don't do as much direct weight training with the legs as most people think.

:FRlol: Yes, because isometrics do anything beyond the beginner level.

That's it, I'm gonna go hold a wall squat for three hours. Be back when my quads are hyooooge.
