Shrugs

I was wondering, has anyone ever used the standing calf machine for shoulder shrugs?
Will it work your traps just as well as dumbell shrugs. I find that I can shrug more weight on the machine than I can pick up. I'd like to hear anyones opinion.

try using straps for your shrugs.

Not necessarily the weight that will make your traps grow, but the number of reps.

Try dropsetting them.

Worked for me

Don't do it. I listed the reasons why in another thread. Simply too many factors make shrugging with the load on top a bad idea.

It's hard to get a decent range of motion on shrugs, even with dbs or a bar. If your standing calf machine is anything like the one I use, the pads sit to high on your shoulders to allow for much movement.

I dont' think it's a good alternative. I'd stick to dbs.

i wouldnt try them but something you may want to try is kneeling shrugs, ive been doing them lately and they murder the traps

Stick with the basics. If you shrug more than you can lift try a smith machine so you don't have to pull off the floor. Straps work to. Deadlifts are good for traps as well and would help you to be able to get the weight off the floor after a while.

What the fuck are kneeling shrugs????

your on your knees with db's in each hand and you shrug,i feel it works traps more then if i was standing, its harder to use ur back or you fall over,so if ur take back out of the equation its all traps

call me naive, but where would straps come in to play for shrugs?

BWWWAAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAH:):)

COULDN'T RESIST!

The idea of using straps when doing shrugs is that you're grip strength won't fatigue before your traps do. The straps wrap around your wrists and around the dumbbell handle so your wrist takes a bit of the weight and its not all up to your grip strength. The only problem using straps is that your grip strength will suffer. Its kinda like the powerlifting belt controversy.

You can do them as a supplement to shrugs, but a better way is to do them on a smith machine and put the bar behind your neck and lift your traps t your neck. They are kind of hard to perfom, but it can be worth trying.

Hey Oak, thanks for the tip on kneeling shrugs. I tried them last night and they are not too bad. Kinda had people staring at me whilest on my knees though (wondering what they were thinkin, huh).

Anyway, I will incorporate this new exercise to my workout.

I didnt know why I didnt even think of this. duh....

if your grip gives before your traps, use straps like he said......very good idea, then you can continue to increase weight..........

I recently changed up my shrug workout to include a reverse type shrug using Dip stand with a weighted belt. Seems to really target the traps for me.
