What kind of crap is coming out of their mouths? They said they were ashamed that George Bush is a Texan? Well I am ashamed they are Texans.

I mean what the heck do they know. The are just bubble head singing bimbos that sing songs like these stupid actors that think they know something other than acting and spout off remarks like gerbal boy Richard Gere did about we should feel compassions for the towel heads after they attacked the WTC.

Actors need to keep their dang mouths shut about politics unless they plan to run. Because I value their opinion as about much ass I do any other bleeding heart liberal... not jack squat.

See, this is what pisses me off about free speech. We say that every American has it. Yet, when someone says something that we don't like, we crucify them. Yes, I'll admit that Natalie Maines comments should not have been said on foreign soil. We should be presenting a unified front to the rest of the world, even if it is total bullshit. But she is more than allowed to say whatever she likes, whether it is in support of this war or our President. I won't say that I agree with what she said, but she should have the right to say it.

Freedom of speech means nothing if you don't like what they are saying does it?

Hell yes, this is coming from a journalist, but it's how I feel.

They are over now anyway.

All throughout the south, their main demographic area, radio stations set up trash cans outside their buildings for people to throw away their dixi chicks cds. One radio station alone got 6000 discarded cds.

As punishment, I believe they should have sex with my Patriot Missile!

She absolutely has the right to free speech. No one is putting her in jail. Freedom of speech doesn't mean that everyone is obligated to like what you are saying. The KKK just like Natalie Maines can say whatever they want. But I have the right to disagree with what they are saying. Natalie Maines is a typical, liberal celebrity that panders to the crowd....and she's fat.

I agree, she should be able to say what she feels, and I respect that. However I question her motives, was she just trying to make waves with the european fans? I don't know.l

BTW, curling, bravo. Another deep, thought provoking thread.

We can't really speculate why she said it because there's no way to know her motives. Perhaps she was hoping for a diplomatic peaceful solution even though there was no chance in hell of Bush ever finding one.

As opposed to the brilliant BB mental elite.

Foreign soil! However people have the right to protest protesters! Free speech goes both ways! What she said does not bother me like some of the Country Music community! However what she said was dumb! If you are going to protest and express anti war views, please offer a intelligant solution instead of saying No war for oil! Bush is Hitler! War is bad! People will die! America is a terrorist! Like many of those protesting the war! I can understand educated arguments against war, but a 5 year old like comments are pathetic! I respect those with intellegence even if I dont agree with them!

This also goes with uneducated War mongers!

Freedom of speech works both ways. Also, "freedom of speech" only means that the GOVERNMENT will not prosecute you for stating an opinion. It means exactly and ONLY that.

She DOES HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY IT!!!!!!!!! SHE FUCKING SAID IT. You leftists think that freedom of speech means that you can say whatever the fuck you want and nobody should call you on it.

Fucking typical:rolleyes:

Freedom of speech means you can say something without fear of government reprisal. The individuals burning her CDs were also exercising freedom of speech

There are going to be implications if your in the limelight and say something that may not be popular.

But she won't be serving time in a jail as she would in alot of countries of the world.

Mad

Nah Curling, but I think the Bush supporters who are fans of the Chix and don't share the Chix's opinions on Bush, and take it all way too personally and whine like babies about it should run around wearing diapers for a week straight.

I think many people's problem with Natalie Maines is this:

1. Born an ugly fat girl.
2. Dreamed of becoming a star in the only country where dreams do come true.
3. Plucked from obscurity by an established local act.
4. First record goes platinum. Fame and fortune are now reality. Most importantly, good luck has come her way big time.
5. Criticizes the leader of the nation that gave her that fame and fortune.

People like this should do nothing but sing their songs and show appreciation for being given something that 99.9% of us want and will never have. This is why people are pissed. It goes way beyond being anti-war. What she said is purely anti-american for the reasons stated above. That is why the bitch back-tracked and that is why they will probably have to cancel their planned tour of the US next month.

Maybe I am typical. I'm a journalist, and I'm damn proud of that. I enjoy getting the story and writing it for others to read. And I think that being able to express your opinion is damn important.

And I know exactly what freedom of speech means and that no ramifications can come from the government because of what you say. Trust me, it's something I've studied. However, a more literal meaning of freedom of speech should be a citizen having the right to say exactly what he or she thinks whether YOU like it or not. An opinion is not always based on what is popular in society. Imagine that.

Free speech should be something that is damn important to each person who calls him or herself an American. Instead, we are becoming as bad as countries who don't allow it. People are persecuting Natalie Maines because they don't approve of what she said. Well, tough shit, she said it, and there's no going back. Get over it.

Persecute is harsh.

I don't like their music and I liked it even less when I heard they were PETA nuts.

Another thing,I'd have more respect for her if she stayed with her opinion and not apologised when she saw she was going to lose alot of bucks at the record store. How can you respect that?

Yes they have a right to their opinion and so do I and people the people that have put money in their pocketbooks do also.

Mad

But you are suggesting that people become robots and totally ignore what others are saying even if they vehemently disagree with it. Isn't provoking emotion and dialogue the whole point of speaking publickly? Why is Natalie allowed to feel emotional enough to announce her opinion of Bush during a concert; and me not be allowed to show my emotions toward her statement? If we aren't allowed to react then why bother saying anything? You said "An opinion is not always based on what is popular in society." If you believe that then you will not complain when I berate that bitch.

Debate is what makes discussions entertaining. I never said that you should not disagree with the statement. Feel free. However, when you allow that statement to completely change your opinion of a person is when we have issues. People who supposedly liked the Chicks' music are now destroying their albums. People who have never even paid attention to the Dixie Chicks are now spouting off with comments about what evil bitches they are, etc. I enjoy lively discussions with people in which I think they are talking total bullshit, and I vehemently disagree with them. However, I don't allow that disagreement to alter my opinion of the person.

Ok, but if you are passionate about something and someone shits on that, you are going to take it personally. I understand what you mean and I agree. But if something hits close to home you just can't let it go. Some people in this country are patriotic to the point that anything remotely resembling an opinion against the US is going to be met with intense hatred. People on both sides are very passionate. I was watching some kid burn a flag on tv last night and I actually got really scared. I wanted to kill him with my bare hands. I was willing to commit murder. I think we can agree that burning CD's is a much better response than violence.

Oh I agree whole-heartedly that burning CD's is a much better response than the alternative. I personally hope that no one is nuts enough to commit an act of violence against Maines. ANd yes, I can also understand taking things personally. I'm even guilty of it. However, I also believe in moving on.
