Shooters...

Looks sweet! I haven't followed gun technology in years (I need to get back into it).

Don't do it! lol

It gets expensive and is addictive! Great fun though.

I still have to get my reloader, dies for various calibers and a good shotgun for 3-gun comps. But I am already building my next AR in my head.

Anyone have a suggestion or experience with optics they prefer or have experience with?

I am looking for one for my, as Scots says "precious little m4"

Right now I am leaning towards this...

Our normal COF has targets from 4-425 yards so the combo red dot and 4x would be great.

Any suggestions or input would be great.

IMO it really comes down to personal preference and how much $$ you want to spend.

That trijicon is a nice looking set up and a lot of LEO and Military peeps use it.

I personally have no experience with them, but I do have an Aimpoint which I really like and also a Eotech holo with the 4 X magnifier which is really nice.

Which aimpoint and eotech do you have Biker?

I just figured I would get a combo scope/red dot to start instead of buying several different models. I am going to check it out this week.

I really liked an EOTech I played with but a couple weeks ago I played with a reflex sight that is kindof like a dot but theres no batteries. It was a very small bright dot in a metal housing but I can't find it on the net.

I'm starting an AR myself. In Kalifornia it's hard to get a completed rifle that isn't used and even then there's very few FFL holders that will handle them. I bought a stripped lower.

I've got dod-sights on a number of handguns, but none on any rifles. For the ranges you mentioned, the dot will be great close, but less effective as the range increases. I'm sure that you know this though. I have an UltraDot that has 4 different size dots that you can switch between, but it's not something that you'll do in the middle of a string of fire. Just be aware that even a small dot will cover most, if not all of the target at longer ranges. Are the majority of the targets more than 100 yards? That would be my range at which I'd opt for a conventional scope over a dot-sight. And the vertical crosshair on a scope makes hold-over a lot easier than with a dot too.

Col. The COF has a pretty even mix of targets and it changes every week. That is why I was looking at this optic.

4x scope with a red dot mounted on top. Seems like the best of both worlds to me. It also has BUIS on it as well.

I dont like the set up. I ran the NSN w/ DR optic a few years ago. It works real well when wearing a mask. otherwise its way to high for me. It keeps your head up but a good shooting position will do that anyway. Dont forget the ACOG are set up for different barrel lengths & rounds(weight). Have you looked into an Aimpoint or Eotech magnafier? Or a 2x ACOG. 300meters w/ irons all day so you dont need a lot of magnification @ 450. -icu11b

Thanks for the input icu11b. Like I said I am still looking around. You think the DR optic is too high? I am just going to have to check out other shooter's optics and see some mounted on my rifle to decide. I have looked at an Eotech 552 not any aimpoints yet though.

It just sits to high for me. @ room distance your aiming @ the head for a COM shoot. & that big ass dot(8 moa) covers your target @ anything longer. I like my optics the same height as irons, 2.5" overbore. Anything more & your zero & rounds trajectory are gonna be a huge PIA. I have made hits on the KD range out to 500m w/ an Aimpoint(4moa) & cant seem to break one(w/ normal use, they break easy when run over by a Bradley). The EoThing has to much going on for me(65moa w/ 1moa dot). Great optic dont get me wrong, just personal taste. I would use the 553 w/ the taller ARMS mount or Larue(best mounts hands down) w/ the EO to get it above the frontsight. One of the strong points of the Aimpoint is the ability to just close the front cover & you can control the amount of light in the tube w/out having to adjust the intensity of the dot itself. Very useful when going from outside on sunny day to a dark house, or vise-versa. -icu11b
