Shackleton's Legendary Antartic Expedition...

Wow...what an epic documentary about some unbelievable hardships and extraordinary leadership.

Somehow I doubt that modern man would have much chance of coping with those conditions for almost two years. I thought I had dealt with some tough conditions but nothing that really compared to their plight. You would have to see it to believe it.

I concluded that we are mostly spoiled brats in this day and age. No way I could have survived that expedition. I think 15 of the original 25 did in fact expire. Miraculous that any of them lived.

It was sad when they had to resort to shooting the puppies, then the sled dogs. Apparently dog meat taste quite good after a steady diet of seal.

The Antartic is quite inhospitable. How does no sun for about 6 months sound with bitter cold and hurricane force gales while witnessing the ice crush your ship after 7 months of being locked in ice??? :(

I saw this documentary at the IMAX theater...It was awesome!!
I opted for the showing at a tradition theatre because it was the more complete version. I probably should have seen it at the IMAX. The screen was too small at that theatre.

I want to see the Everest show at the IMAX. Has anyone seen that??? Into Thin Air was an awesome book. The man I most admire is Reinhold Messner. He climbed Everest by the more difficult face by himself, with no supplemental oxygen. Normal men start dieing at 8000 meters without supplemental oxygen.

Good thing my mountaineering career got cut short with a near lethal accident some time ago. I'm pretty sure that the mountains would have decided to keep me by now. Still had some close calls recently that took a miracle to survive.

I don't think they specifically mentioned any deaths but they started with 25 men and finished with 10. :(

i think only one of them survived (or all of them died) and it was just journals and pictures they left behind

you hear sotries of that kind of heroism all the time in the modern age, technology has removed some of the perils we face nowadays, those guys couldnt be airlifted as plabnes back then hel 1 person max and had to be bi-wings and ran on corn oil....as a result death was something they faced more regularly

some diseases mean people battle on for years nowadays, but in terms of expeditions, when something screws up they are usually airlifted away...

This documentary was almost painfully accurate. There were no attempts to glamorize it or cover up the truth. That is why it only shows at the IMAX and maybe a small independent theatre.

Yea...their rescue would be assured these days. Just get on the radio and give some GPS coordinates. I like that.

Different story above 6000 meters. Even modern helicopters are faced with limitations.

Absolutely truly amazing to go almost two years. Perhaps the lack of females helped preserve their sanity???

I see that your New Years Resolution did not address your spelling/typing prowess. :D

That would be fitting since Shackleton was an Englishman leading an English expedition. The expedition did not receive much publicity because they returned in the middle of WWI. Pretty much overshadowed their epic adventure.

2 typos in that....not to bad :D

my new years resolution was to get up earlier and train harder

most of them probably left to ghet away from women. seriously, screwy social situations back then and all.

Yea...my dog has absolutely no problems. He is fixed and cannot talk.

I have considered having myself fixed on several occasions. About every other time I deal with a female. Seems like interactions with them are either pleasant or painful. I think I got spoiled in school when beautiful girls threw themselves at me. Think I may have to become famous to enjoy a renassaince(sp).
