Serious Racist question

Ok, we joke a lot, but i'm hoping (maybe impossible) for serious opinions because it seems i'm over reacting.. maybe..

Here is the situation, group of parents, at intro to the school kind of thing for kinder garden ...

Woman asks the principle, how many of your teachers are ethnic...

My thought is her question was extremely racist...??

what do you think she meant/why do you think she was asking? I have no idea the context of her question. It's not something I would ask...how are you reacting (or overreacting) to the question?

Depends is school rural or inner city? No actually its totally racist and out of line. They are obviously implying that those ethnic values will be harmful to there child.

LOL yeah.
I can't think of any legitimate reason to ask that. And even if there was a legitimate reason, you'd have to be stupid to ask it in a group like that. And racists are stupid, hence, yes, she is a racist.

WTF does "ethnic" mean anyway? Non-white or non christian?

"How many teachers aren't white christians?"

How does that sound?

I'll add more information..

It was a group of parents visiting a k-5 school, Stem school (science, technology, engineering, math) it's a charter school.. the woman was black and we were being addressed by the principle.

LOL yeah context helps.

So she's asking about the diversity of the staff. Still a stupid question, and yeah I still think she's probably a racist, or overly concerned about race.

Nah, not racist. I ask that all the time. I took my kid to toys r us for a monster truck and i asked the cashier how many employees were ethnic.

If she was white its racist but because she was black its not racist?

Its racist either damn way.

Probably a poorly worded question...I would wonder about it but would perhaps wrongly assume she was asking if it was a diverse staff
I don't totally see why it would matter for her kid but maybe its because I'm caucasian and don't think about it too much

I don't totally think it's inappropriate. Children are somewhat forced into white, Christian culture in school.

It would never effect me because I am white and Christian.

It shouldn't matter how many teachers are or are not white Christians, but it does, and I can see how someone who holds on particularly strongly to a minority culture would be curious. Not that they have a choice. The majority culture would dominate any place or country. But I don't think this question is racist or totally out of line.

Yes I think that is the point. But we really don't know the motivation of the speaker. For example:

1. How many teachers are ethnic? (because I think diversity is good and I want a diverse staff).

2. How many teachers are ethnic? (I hope none, because I want my children to be taught by white christians only).

3. How many teachers are ethnic? (I hope all, because I hate white Christians).

Motivations 2 and 3 are obviously racist. Motivation 1, I would say is less clear. People could argue that that person is too wrapped up in race, and it shouldn't matter. People could also argue that a diverse staff is good, and something to legitimately look for in a school.

Continuing on with my last post;

Spywizard was vague on purpose, to illustrate bias. We assume the lady is white and it was racist, but now we know she was black, so maybe it wasn't racist. That's not fair, thats reverse discrimination, some would say. Blacks always get the benefit of the doubt. Blacks get away with racism that whites can't. Typical right wing radio blather. But is it correct?

It is true that any of the 3 motivations could come from a person of any race, but are they all equally probable?

When a white woman says it, what does she mean? She wants diversity or she wants racial purity? We don't know. If she's wearing jeans and has a hemp bracelet and beads would that lead you to assume something different than if she was dressed like Misses Cleaver with a beehive hairdo and a Sunday church dress?

We don't know, and the best lesson is probably that it is wrong to assume. Asking a follow up question (in private) would probably be the best course of action, before judging this woman.

same thing...anyone overly concerned with race is a racist to one extent or another...and, truth be told, most of us probably fall into that category to one extent or another...recognizing those weaknesses and then trying to not let them override your decision-making process is what really matters, yes??

I'm going to be totally honest; I assumed it was an African American asking about diversity for her son because it's not a question I would ask. That's exactly what I pictured in my mind, a young African American little boy's Mom. Could have been a girl, but I pictured a boy. Lol. That's why I wanted to know more about why he felt like he overreacted.

I pictured the same minus the little boy or girl part but I did picture someone who was not white asking.

Smart.

If the parent asking, was of a minority ethnicity, it could have been meant to help the parent to decide whether their kid would be likely to be alone in his/her ethnicity, or would be well-accepted as one of a larger group. Or it could even have been a prospective ethnic-phobic home buyer who wanted to see who lives near that school...

There are all kinds of reasons; both good and evil, for one person to want to know the ethnic makeup of a business, school, or neighborhood. Case in point, a barber whose talent is in Afro styles, wouldn't want to take a job in a salon in Little Tokyo, while a Russian immigrant with kids would maybe not want to enroll their kid in an ESL Spanish-speaking school. Or it could be a garden-variety bigot who needs their head knocked in... No way to know.

LOL yeah.

What is she was black?

Lol, nah. Not at all. I just assume people in general are good, and not racist, at least to a conscious degree. Since I didn't have barely any information and I wouldn't ask the question, I assigned a different race to the woman other than mine and gave her characteristics as someone mainly concerned about her 'son' (since I have a daughter, I guess I went with son.) Lol. It was easier to go there, than the beehive Sunday wearing dress lady being openly racist.

bottom line, in any school if you are asking about race, religion, or sex (m or f), it is a bias question, racist or sexist. There is no room for that question in a school, ANY school. So to answer the question... yea she asked a racist question.
In school i dont care if the teacher is green with one eye and worships the devil... would it be creepy as fuck... umm yea... but as long as my kid is learning, then they served their purpose.

The mom wanted to know if all the teachers are white or if they had any black staff outside of the kitchen.

the only place youre going to find a non racist school, non bias teachers, no shootings, no conflict, no bullys, a structured class room, no drugs, cigs, alcohol, sex ect. and keep the full attention of the student 100% of the time... home schooling... otherwise all that shit comes into play.

and then before ya know it your daughter walks in with a guy like plank and then the shit hits the fan... fuckin christ ive seen it a thousand times lolol

Unless the person asking was ethnic themselves and wanted to know if there would be any "like" teachers there. Still pretty racist though

what SD is saying is it's always racist unless the person is black then they can say racist shit and get away with it, like nigger is a term of respect, like they survived slavery...nigga pls lol

I assumed it was sum cracka bitch wantin to know if'n her chittlins was gon' be learned up by sum unfit 'edjimicator' that aint even got white skin!

thats how the game works.

I grew up in a black neighborhood... patterson nj... please believe me when i tell you blacks are just as if not more racist than whites... they used to call me "clear" or im not white im italian and i used to laugh and say italians hate you but you respect them.. interesting.. in any case, i dont know about the rest of the country but here in ny/nj racism is alive and well and doesnt seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Personally, i could give a shit, respect me and ill respect you. i just dont believe in interracial relationships. thats a whole diff convo tho.

Oh so she was interested in the racial composition of the teaching staff. So what?

You made the right assumptions; I didn't. I thought Spywizard was genuinely concerned about a racist comment, not setting up a trick question. And the question just seems bad. How many teachers are ethnic? Even with good intentions that's a dumb question and a dumb way to say it in a group.

"Do you have a policy concerning diversity of your teaching staff?" Or something like that, would have been better.

Is that really any less racist though? Why should you have a policy that favors hiring someone based on whether they diversify the staff's ethnicity? Wouldn't hiring the most qualified person for the position be most beneficial to the students/school? Maybe I can agree with hiring someone of a different ethnicity out of two equally qualified applicants, for the sake of diversity, even though that's racist in itself. But I can live with it.

Just talking about race breeds racism it seems. As long as we're always discussing race there will always be racism. If it doesn't matter what race someone is, why even bring it into discussion?

Nothing inherently racist unless you know why she was asking. I'm not even remotely offended without the context.

lol bro im not bullshitting you.. its really like that here... im not even exaggerating a little.. come by next christmas... my fam will leave you shell shocked and pissing your pants lolol
ive had my black friends come.. they laugh their asses off.. and i go to their homes and same thing... but they dont want their daughters with me and i dont want my daughters with them... all for the same reason.. it complicates things, but if two people are truly in love, who is anyone to stand in the way of that... we dont have to like it or agree but we do respect the decision
